‘It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thriteen.’ Winston Smith works for the Ministry of Truth in London, chief city of Airstrip One. Big Brother stares out from every poster, the Thought Police uncover every act of betrayal. When Winston finds love with Julia, he discovers that life does not have to be dull and deadening, and awakens to new possibilities. Despite the police helicopters that hover and circle overhead, Winston and Julia begin to question the Party; they are drawn towards conspiracy. Yet Big Brother will not tolerate dissent - even in the mind. For those with original thoughts they invented Room 101… Nineteen Eight-Four is George Orwell’s terrifying vision of a totalitarian future in which everything and everyone is slave to a tyrannical regime. ‘More relevant to today than almost any other book that you can think of.’

Where are the “I’m being censored” crowd? Come on, this is the perfect opportunity to say “it’s literally 1984″ and actually be right for the first time.

Quite intriguing how this book moved from the fiction section to the non-fiction section, subsection instruction manuals, it’s become recommended reading for those elites mandating our lives… Written in ‘48, it’s a scarily accurate prediction of the bullsh+t we are currently wading through… Bring on the revolution, long live the rebellion…

Nice tags OP :-) I see that the humorless Jack has already arrived because even classic literature threatens his identity as the shining knight of pure *hite.
Orwell is the greatest British novelist of all time. And it’s worth taking the time to read everything he wrote.
Jack might, particularly, appreciate The Road to Wigan Pier. Though on occasion he might find himself staring into an uncomfortable mirror of his self-righteousness.

That wasn’t a criticism of Orwell. The man was a fantastic author. Completely agree with his views on totalitarianism.
Shame the right keep pretending he was one of them.

Lol. It’s even funnier when the Left pretend the Orwell was one of them.

Essential reading, especially before the mid-terms.
Dear Gordon, try searching the Web with the terms ‘George Orwell’ and ‘Democratic Socialism’. You might find Google useful.

Jesus christ Gordon. Try harder to have a clue what you’re talking about.

You might want to try and read Orwell as opposed to searching the internet - you pair of clowns. You might even learn something, Orwell was not a leftist. The Road to Wigan Pier, Jack, that’s where you need to start. He’ll tell you himself. Now run along, you gibbering plonkers, there’s a window out there that hasn’t been licked, yet.

Who narrates this?

How about we bypass your interpretation of his work and get the quote straight from the horse’s mouth.
“Every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written, directly or indirectly, against totalitarianism and for democratic socialism, as I understand it.” - George Orwell

Gordon voted out because he wanted to spend more time in France.

‘Gibbering plonkers’, that’s fricken awesome… Shall add that to my list of insults wank+rs need to hear… That’s a five star insult…

The modern left mistook this for a how-to manual. Of course if you told Orwell about today’s DOJ, he would say that you were lying, as no government would go THAT far.

@lainexp - Is that the str8 dope from Lilliput, or something? What’s with the eye test tomfoolery?

I would urge all the parties to actually read the book. Because the story is about the world divided between three totalitarian super-states: Oceania, Eurasia and Eastasia. Statist extremes could be both on the left and on the right sides of political spectrum.
November 16th, 2021
@Mria Think you’ve missed something here. You’re lead to believe that because it’s what The Party tells its citizens. When you take into consideration that the party’s narrative is proven to be unreliable, it becomes entirely possible that Oceania is the only totalitarian state and the Eurasia and Eastasia are either peaceful utopias, or don’t even exist. The only thing to support their existence is an unreliable narrator.

Does anyone have a copy of 2021 (reworking of 1984) read by Richard Trinder and Matt Smith. Spotify sucks.

Was Orwell a socialist?
Eric Arthur Blair (25 June 1903 – 21 January 1950) known by his pen name George Orwell, was an English novelist, essayist, journalist and critic. His work is characterised by lucid prose, biting social criticism, total opposition to totalitarianism, and outspoken support of democratic socialism.
