America: The Farewell Tour - Chris Hedges
Shared by:daenigma100
A profound and provocative examination of America in crisis, where unemployment, deindustrialization, and a bitter hopelessness and malaise have resulted in an epidemic of diseases of despair - drug abuse, gambling, suicide, magical thinking, xenophobia, and a culture of sadism and hate.
America, says Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Chris Hedges, is convulsed by an array of pathologies that have arisen out of profound hopelessness, a bitter despair and a civil society that has ceased to function. The opioid crisis, the retreat into gambling to cope with economic distress, the pornification of culture, the rise of magical thinking, the celebration of sadism, hate, and plagues of suicides are the physical manifestations of a society that is being ravaged by corporate pillage and a failed democracy. As our society unravels, we also face global upheaval caused by catastrophic climate change. All these ills presage a frightening reconfiguration of the nation and the planet.
Donald Trump rode this disenchantment to power. In America: The Farewell Tour, Hedges argues that neither political party, now captured by corporate power, addresses the systemic problem. Until our corporate coup d’état is reversed, these diseases will grow and ravage the country. A poignant cry reported from communities across the country, America: The Farewell Tour seeks to jolt us out of our complacency while there is still time.

Wow, an unmitigated howl of despair. It’s always end of the world in this genre - like the Marvel movies.
I prefer Chris Hedges’ earlier, funnier work.

I don’t know Caesar, sometimes disaster movies are fun to watch. I’ll give points to whoever wrote the books description though, they didn’t blame Trump for all our countries woes, just mentioned that he rode that into power.
Perhaps the book does more or less. But it’s nice to see at least a description that doesn’t blame the left or the right. There’s plenty of blame to go around.

Someone needs to press the BRB.

Sounds like the opening address of a preacher in a big tent revival, calling everyone to repentance at the eleventh hour. Instead, his narrow-sighted depiction ends at the steps of America’s corporations, as though man’s entire nature, motivation and value can be summed up by his social/economic status. I think the preacher could do better.

I think, rather, he is pointing to the consequences of a a political system that has allowed its government to become controlled by corporate money and corporate interests — to the exclusion of its citizens (who would no doubt prefer a more balanced approach to governance by their elected representatives).
This is a very different from what you are suggesting (that he concludes either that corporations are the root of all evil; or that citizens’ value should be determined by their social/economic status).
Surely most on both sides would agree that the influence of money has become more powerful that the will of the people in the current political system. As the author argues, this was the major reason Donald Trump was elected, in an unfortunately failed effort to “drain the swamp.”

Unworthy, even of a comment!

Chris Hedges is a very respectable name. America has big problems. Corporate hijacking of Western democracies is evident everywhere. They wage wars, encourage immigration, divide people and get richer every day, sucking up wealth from the poor. Regan/ Thatcher imposed oligarchy in Russia, now oligarchy has come to the US and UK. The Clintons, Trump, Theresa May, oligarchs the lot of them. All this going on while China silently builds roads and bridges as far afield as in Kenya and Tanzania to join the world in one ‘Belt and Road’ spending $900 billion to conquer Asia, Europe and African emerging markets without firing a bullet. Chinese trains bring trade goods to London and Duisburg daily, China is now EU’s biggest trading partner, not US. China has bought a whole brand new deep sea port in Pakistan. Look up ‘Belt and Road Project’. China is choking the life out of the US slowly. These are bad times and the Western oligarchies have no answer to China’s manufacturing might. The irony is that the rich Western corporations would still export technology and manufacturing to China for cheap labour while American manufacturing hubs turn into rust-belts, manufacturing nothing but despair, hatred and rednecks. Greed destroyed the West.

Ceaser, all you fools are sowing the seeds of your own demise. If the your own rapacious greed and gluttony doesn’t destroy you then the oppressed masses will.
The stock market is booming while the whole country is eroding lol- the elite are too blinded by greed to see the ferment that is bubbling. Just look at all the despair and anger and hopelessness around you.
These protests and riots must have the elite worried. They’re not yet able to defeat a popular uprising, were one to rise.
Anyways, the

Been looking all over for this in ebook. Didn’t think I’d find it on here, so many thanks.
It must be good. It’s Chris Hedges, and if that weren’t enough, it’s got all these negative comments from the usual suspects to prove it.
Five Stars and thanks again.

LOL The old comments from the whiny MAGA apologists and nuthuggers aged like milk. Chris was right.
