An audacious and powerful debut novel: a second American Civil War, a devastating plague, and one family caught deep in the middle a story that asks what might happen if America were to turn its most devastating policies and deadly weapons upon itself.
Sarat Chestnut, born in Louisiana, is only six when the Second American Civil War breaks out in 2074. But even she knows that oil is outlawed, that Louisiana is half underwater, and that unmanned drones fill the sky. When her father is killed and her family is forced into Camp Patience for displaced persons, she begins to grow up shaped by her particular time and place. But not everyone at Camp Patience is who they claim to be.
Eventually Sarat is befriended by a mysterious functionary, under whose influence she is turned into a deadly instrument of war. The decisions that she makes will have tremendous consequences not just for Sarat but for her family and her country, rippling through generations of strangers and kin alike.

2074 sounds a bit far off,
Within the next 3 or 4 years seems plausible, the way things are going in America these days.!(Sickly LOL).!
Thank you once again Anansisan,
Another quality audiobook.!.
You just keep giving and giving.
I’ve said this before and I’ll probably say it again…
I really appreciate the work you do, you (along with a few others) make my life much more bearable and certainly more entertaining.
Thank you Anansisan.

Refugee camp is changed to camp for displaced persons…
Oil outlawed? What they won’t use plastic in 50 years?
Seems like a naive authors book.
Let’s hope his plot and story make up for this.
I love good stories. Might be similar to the EMP books. Wonder how the ungraded surveillance misses the assassin type training going on in the officially run camp?

“Seems like a naive authors book”
Hmmmm, the author is an award winning journalist who has covered the war in Afghanistan, the military trials at Guantánamo Bay, the Arab Spring revolution in Egypt and the refugee camps in Syria and Turkey. It’s a serious novel and nothing like the “EMP” books.

Also, refugees are people forced to leave their own country because of war, natural disaster etc. People who are displaced withing their own country are not refugees. They are displaced persons.

Hello everyone. Good comments. This book sounds interesting. I have been reading SF and Fantasy since my high school years in the 70s. You would be amazed at how much SF that in it’s day was thought to be completely out of the realm of reality. Think about what may be the very 1st SF book ever written: Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein. For a person to have actual parts from another human used and actually function! The thought of it in it’s day scared everyone half to death. Her contemporaries would have thought of the idea of heart transplants, marrow transplants, skin grafts, etc to be laughable.
