A new assessment of the West’s colonial record In the wake of the dissolution of the Soviet empire in 1989, many believed that we had arrived at the ‘End of History’ – that the global dominance of liberal democracy had been secured forever. Now however, with Russia rattling its sabre on the borders of Europe and China rising to challenge the post-1945 world order, the liberal West faces major threats. These threats are not only external. Especially in the Anglosphere, the ‘decolonisation’ movement corrodes the West’s self-confidence by retelling the history of European and American colonial dominance as a litany of racism, exploitation, and massively murderous violence. Nigel Biggar tests this indictment, addressing the crucial questions in eight chapters: Was the British Empire driven primarily by greed and the lust to dominate? Should we speak of ‘colonialism and slavery’ in the same breath, as if they were identical? Was the Empire essentially racist? How far was it based on the theft of land? Did it involve genocide? Was it driven fundamentally by the motive of economic exploitation? Was undemocratic colonial government necessarily illegitimate? and, Was the Empire essentially violent, and its violence pervasively racist and terroristic? Biggar makes clear that, like any other long-standing state, the British Empire involved elements of injustice, sometimes appalling. On occasions it was culpably incompetent and presided over moments of dreadful tragedy. Nevertheless, from the early 1800s the Empire was committed to abolishing the slave trade in the name of a Christian conviction of the basic equality of all human beings. It ended endemic inter-tribal warfare, opened local economies to the opportunities of global trade, moderated the impact of inescapable modernisation, established the rule of law and liberal institutions such as a free press, and spent itself in defeating the murderously racist Nazi and Japanese empires in the Second World War. As encyclopaedic in historical breadth as it is penetrating in analytical depth, Colonialism offers a moral inquest into the colonial past, forensically contesting damaging falsehoods and thereby helping to rejuvenate faith in the West’s future. The British and the French ended slavery, they had to deploy anti slavery sea patrols to stop the African tribes selling there own kind into slavery…

I know, and it’s also a little-known fact that once African slavery ended, Africans protested for many decades, as they had come to realize the superiority of the white man and INSISTED they continue being enslaved to such an obviously BETTER form of human. Alas, they had to have freedom FORCED ON THEM because you know how dumb these darkies are, so not only did the white man give them a noble purpose in life (work hard, while we give you orders), but sadly, broke their hearts once the enslavement, torture, genocide and cultural destruction the whites brought faded away. Such a sad time Africas who only want a chance to serve their superiors… So sad…

Most people dont know very much about histroy. Countries that colonized other countries always brought advanced technology with them. When the british colonized Indea, they brought changes that allowed the Indian population to live much longer and grow much faster, as well as democracy and engineering. India was a filthy slum before that. This is how Advanced countries have always done since Roman Times, The Romans always brought their highly advanced engineering, medicine, policing of the streets and so many other things to more primitive cultures.
Could you imagine Africa today if no one went in there? They would still be living in mud huts like the primitive stone age natives we found them in when the Brits went in Sub-Saharan Africa the 1860’s. Imagine Will Smith and Beyonce living in mud huts and dancing around fires wearing loin cloths and thumping animal shields with their spears.
And I know brain dead liberals will scream racist!! Rather than have any kind of understanding of facts or reality.

Got some news for you, slavery NEVER ended in Africa. If you have the incredibly difficult ability (which most liberals dont) to do some research, you will find that today there are over 10 MILLION Black slaves currently chained up and being sold to other parts of Africa as well as the Middle east. The British and French even tried to stop it. Africa has always been and still is a slave nation, THEY INVENTED IT..

You’ve already been corrected by hedgehogstar and I’ll drop another truth bomb on you. The Africans didn’t invent slavery. It’s been going on everywhere since time immemorial. The word slave is said to come from Slav, as so many Slavic people were enslaved by the Vikings.
