Life at the Bottom: The Worldview That Makes the Underclass - Theodore Dalrymple
Shared by:hdgdf
Here is a searing account-probably the best yet published-of life in the underclass and why it persists as it does. Theodore Dalrymple, a British psychiatrist who treats the poor in a slum hospital and a prison in England, has seemingly seen it all. Yet in listening to and observing his patients, he is continually astonished by the latest twist of depravity that exceeds even his own considerable experience. Dalrymple’s key insight in Life at the Bottom is that long-term poverty is caused not by economics but by a dysfunctional set of values, one that is continually reinforced by an elite culture searching for victims. This culture persuades those at the bottom that they have no responsibility for their actions and are not the molders of their own lives. Drawn from the pages of the cutting-edge political and cultural quarterly City Journal, Dalrymple’s book draws upon scores of eye-opening, true-life vignettes that are by turns hilariously funny, chillingly horrifying, and all too revealing-sometimes all at once. And Dalrymple writes in prose that transcends journalism and achieves the quality of literature.

From the rich guy who gave us “in praise of prejudice”, a classic on why those poors deserve what’s coming to them.

Dalrymple is shocked by the twists of depravity among the underclass? Just wait until he discovers the depravity amongst the posh …

He wouldn’t dare to write about depravity and a dysfunctional set of values among the filthy rich.

Well, now at least we understand why poverty and class didn’t exist in Victorian times. No Liberals back then to continually reinforce a dysfunctional set of values. I often wondered why coal miners and factory workers a back then all owned mansions and super steamships (the predecessors to super yachts) while their descendants lack even a millionth of that wealth. All down to bad values dontcha know.
And, clearly, the UK systematically cutting benefit schemes past the bone will just result in a resurgence of that historical wealth. And not, as some have speculated, prominent conservatives being publicly kneecapped by outraged destitute pensioners.

I worked as a nurse at a unit where “Dalrymple” worked. He was the biggest tosser I ever had the misfortune to work with. Swanned around with his latest tome tucked under his arm (carefully positioned so the title and author were visible to all), chucked patients notes across the office when annoyed, shouted at any grade of staff he considered inferior to him, and announced that “trivial” overdose patients should be sent to jail.
And City Hospital (previously Dudley Road Hospital) in Birmingham, UK, is in a poorer area (most hospitals are. Hospitals don’t improve local property prices) but calling it a “slum hospital” really isn’t accurate. It’s a standard district General Hospital, no better or worse than the average NHS hospital.
“Dalrymple” (aka irl Dr Anthony Daniels) is one of the most unpleasant people I worked with - and, believe me, amongst consultants, that’s quite a title to win. He was also renowned for being bad at his job.
