I wouldn’t call it a ‘metafictional narrative’: to me Tristram Shandy has always seemed the quintessential eighteenth century novel: the English Candide: the book Rasselas should have been.
It’s certainly a text you need to know to understand either the English novel, or the English.
And it works really well as an audiobook.
