A fascinating historical account of Oliver Winchester, his rifles, and the evolution of America’s gun culture.
Before he founded the Winchester Company in 1866, Oliver Winchester, like most Americans at the time, had never owned a gun, or even shot one. 150 years later, his company has sold over eight million firearms. In The Gunning of America, historian Pamela Haag tells the story of the Winchester rifle, the Winchester family, and the origins of American gun culture. Drawing on the company’s voluminous archives, Haag reveals that America has not always been a gun-loving nation, but rather was sold the idea (and the guns that went with it) by gun manufacturers and shrewd marketers. Tracing our current gun culture to its unexpected roots, Haag sheds light on one of American society’s most contentious debates.

Largely garbage designed to pander to people with a existing heavy anti gun bias.
July 5th, 2016
Largely doesn’t even go too deep into the actual history of gun culture in the US as much as talking about a number of modern talking points about gun control.

Please ignore the gun-loving freaks Anansisan.
Thank you for your effort.

Joydiv is correct: ignore the gun-lovers and continue posting anti-gun materials. All thinking gun lovers should be aware of what our enemies are saying. It makes it easier to debunk the prohibitionist drivel and gives us an occasional chuckle.

Agree with GhostDog, a load of rubbish propaganda that ignores the real issues.

I see the ‘thought NAZI’S’ are out in full force..on BOTH SIDES. For Christ sake let people read what they like and make up their own minds. If you don’t like the book…move on. If you like it say ‘thank you’ and move on. Is there ANYONE who REALY believes in FREEDOM of speech & thought?
Not anyone commenting here.

It’s the Constitution, folks. You can’t take it piecemeal. You support the whole document or your renounce it. You can’t pick and choose the freedoms you like, discarding the rest. If you support the 1st Amendment, you have to support the 2nd. It’s that simple. The ‘anti-either’ ninnies are both wrong.

And mean while the civilised world watches on with bemused horror …

Ummm - but isn’t it an Amendment?!?
Couldn’t they just make another one?
July 6th, 2016
Bemused, where would it stop? How soon until we’re Europe all over and get arrested for saying something that someone else finds offensive? 1st Amendment protection. Being forced to testify or spend your life in jail until you do? 5th Amendment protection. This is why you have to take it all…or none. The Constitution is for us, not the government. Without it, we’d be subjects.

Personally I’m happy to live where someone who bullies or demonises others is arrested rather than having metal detectors at my kids school gates. But 300M Americans can’t be wrong, so I guess it’s your choice. Stay safe … xx

I’ll just put this here and see the reaction of the gun-loving crowd (from BBC.com):
“So many people die annually from gunfire in the US that the death toll between 1968 and 2011 eclipses all wars ever fought by the country. According to research by Politifact, there were about 1.4 million firearm deaths in that period, compared with 1.2 million US deaths in every conflict from the Revolutionary War to Iraq.”
It is estimated that the number of guns is roughly equivalent to US population - about 300 million guns.
If this isn’t a nation collectively going crazy, I don’t know what is.

No “thought Nazis” here Max; just a badly thought, badly researched, badly written book, and thanks too anansian for always sharing controversial books; this is enlightening.

Joydiv,
The figures you are looking at include firearm suicides and gang violence. Exclude those and you see that the good people with firearms are just that…good. The BBC is very anti-gun and they’re going to maximize the “bang” of their story by inflating the balloon until it almost pops.
In every instance where CCW has been implemented, crime has gone down. Every city with uber gun control has exponentially more gun crime. If you remove Detroit, Chicago and New Orleans (all big gun control cities) from the stats of firearm deaths, that number drops to less than deaths from falls.
If you want to talk about a nation going crazy…look at progressives.

The only *gun culture* is the culture of thugs, criminals, rappers, drug and other gangs, assorted idiots who live in public housing with one parent living on welfare - no father figure in sight and a delusional way of thinking they can break all kinds of laws and then point the fingers as ‘whites’ as oppressors. No schooling, no religion other than the worship of themselves. That’s you’r so-called gun culture.
@joydiv; As for me being ‘a gun-loving freak’? Who the H are YOU? I am a law-abiding citizen, no criminal record and my family is in law enforcement. I happen to love God, my family, this country, the Constitution (all of it) and the Bill of Rights in particular (all of it).
Not one mass shooter has ever been a Republican, Conservative or criminal. Ever. That cannot be ‘debunked’.
It’s the law-abiding firearms owners are the good people. The idiots are usually democrats.
The Second Amendment was signed into a gun culture but for very good reasons….and you’ll notice the Founding Fathers weren’t politically correct but had very good reasons why they thought Americans should have the legal right to keep and bear arms. I suggest all you left-wing idiots study not only the Constitution but also the Bill of Rights.

As I predicted: 1.4 million gun-related deaths don’t even make a dent. They are either swept under the rug or, bizarrely, attributed to excessive gun control. Never let the facts get between you and your precious guns people. And keep ignoring the horrific massacres only the US, among first world nations, experiences on a regular and almost predictable way.
I’ll just console myself with the fact that I have the whole Atlantic between me and these nuts.
