There actually were Communists in high positions in American government and other institutions, and the events of subsequent decades have fully vindicated that claim. Alger Hiss was a real Soviet agent, and so were the Rosenbergs.
But unfortunately, beyond cases like that with actual evidence, the HUAC also went far beyond the actual problems we really had and started accusing random celebrities for no reason. This was so obviously counter-productive to the anti-Communist cause that it has made it nearly impossible to discuss the actual problems with Communism, even on a philosophical level, ever since.
