Barack Obama: Conservative, Pragmatist, Progressive - Burton I. Kaufman
Shared by:cryotag
In this insightful biography, Burton I. Kaufman explores how the political career of Barack Obama was marked by conservative tendencies that constantly frustrated his progressive supporters and gave the lie to socialist fear-mongering on the right. Obama’s was a landmark presidency that paradoxically, Kaufman shows, resulted in few, if any, radical shifts in policy.
Following his election, President Obama’s supporters and detractors anticipated radical reform. He was the first African American to serve as president and reached the White House on a campaign promise of change. But Kaufman finds in Obama clear patterns of classical conservativism of an ideological sort and basic policy-making pragmatism. His commitment to usher in a multi-racial, multi-ethnic, and multi-cultural society was fundamentally connected to opening up, but not radically altering, the existing free enterprise system.
The Affordable Care Act, arguably President Obama’s greatest policy achievement, was a distillation of his complex motivations for policy. More conservative than radical, the ACA fitted the expansion of health insurance into the existing system. Similarly, in foreign policy, Obama eschewed the use of force to affect regime change. Yet he kept boots on the ground in the Middle East and supported ballot-box revolts geared toward achieving in foreign countries the same principles of liberalism, free enterprise, and competition as existed in the United States.
In estimating the course and impact of Obama’s full political life, Kaufman makes clear that the desire for and fear of change in the American polity affected the popular perception but not the course of action of the 44th US President.

“Conservative tendencies” You have got to be joking!
He ran on Hope and Change.
During his reign of terror and incompetence the American People only Hoped that they would have any Change left in their pockets.
The ACA failed miserably, weak in foreign policy, and divided the nation instead of bringing it together.
Kaufman is Clueless!

Still the only decent POTUS of the twenty first century. Ran the cleanest (legal) administration perhaps ever.

Conservative and progressive are somewhat ambiguous and relative terms, in contrast to Biden, Obama was more conservative. He certainly was more stable.

For a politician emanating from the Chicago machine, his administration was remarkably free of scandal.

Yeah ccreader, but that is as far as is easily perceivable the only truly good thing about his administration.
I love how the words Conservative and Progressive are totally dependant on ones point of view.

Who???

President Obama was indistinguishable from George W. Bush in terms of policy. For me it illuminated the lie of the two parties. Both are honeytraps for the few politicians striving to do anything besides enrich our corporate overlords.
If fascism is a merger of the state and corporations than we are undeniably a fascist country.

If you intend strictly profit-seeking, business corporations, that’s not what “corporate state” means. It’s a whole ‘nuther fascism.
Think of it as “bodies” or entities.
The US is undeniably not a fascist state.

Banal mass-market drivel and codswallop.

It took a day or so to get going, but this site delivered exactly the outraged-that-a-book-about-this-man-exists frenzy I’ve come to expect.

//President Obama was indistinguishable from George W. Bush in terms of policy.//
jonwb, I can think of many distinctions.
The Defense of Marriage Act, for one. which Obama shredded, with the help of Biden, and then mandated LGBT agendas such as same sex marriage, forcing schools to allow transgender bathroom usage, men competing in women’s sports, LGBTQ sex-ed for children, etc., which we are still dealing with the fall-out from. Shutting down Christian adoption agencies who wouldn’t comply with LGBTQ mandates. Government healthcare. Fining pharmacies who refused to distribute abortion inducing drugs. Not indistinguishable, eh? I could go on and on.
Obama refused to wear the American flag on his lapel.
Obama legitimized black suspicions of white racism into America, leading to Critical race theory, BLM and the assassination of many good police officers.
Although he was not without his faults, Bush was a president for everyone.

Caesar, Obama had plenty of scandals. Here in Indiana, where I live, papers were illegally forged to get his name on the ballot for the primaries. He virtually stole that election. His public criticism of every black victim deepened the perception of racism, even though he was supported by white people in the ballot box.
Obama’s infamous quote referring to Americans on the other side sums up his political divisiveness:
“It’s not surprising, then, they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.” -Obama
Such divisive rhetoric is what led to Trump winning in 2016. Trump could not have won in 2008 without Obama pouring fuel on a burning culture war.

@Jiminy Cricket : Obama’s only offence was being President while Black.

Gweilo, the race card is such a lazy one to play. You don’t have to use your brain, think about political philosophy, or analyze their record.
It just so happens, that another black man ran for US Senate in Illinois in 2004, against Obama. His name was Alan Keyes, and he had won the Republican primary. I had been an Illinois resident all my life. Keyes was the ONLY politician’s sign that I had ever planted in my front yard. I had the opportunity to hear him speak in person and thought that he was a magnificent statesman, worthy of public office.
Go stick that in your racist narrative!
April 19th, 2022
@Jiminy: I never called you personally a racist, I’m sure you have a Black Friend. Odd you’re so sensitive about that.
And the “lazy race card”, as played by every rightwinger…
Anyway, half or more Republicans believe that Obama was born in Kenya and a secret Muslim as well as being a socialist. Just because some wackos told them on talk radio or Fox. Like the nonsense about election fraud, gay agenda, religion you listed.
April 26th, 2022
Yeah, Gweilo, I know, for you guys, anything that’s not reported by CNN is a conspiracy, just like Hunter Biden’s laptop. It took two years for the NY Times to finally admit that it was legit.
I’m not into conspiracies, but I was a total news junkie during the Obama administration and I followed him like a hawk. No, I don’t follow radio talk shows or Fox news, but neither do I put my head in the ground every time I hear something that is a bit disagreeable. People tend to believe what they want to believe, and disbelieve what they want, not because it’s supported by facts, but rather because it fits the person’s narrative. (Call me an existentialist if you like.) I don’t claim any special immunity to it, but at least I’m aware of my own personal biases and how they can develop blinders.
