Thanks so VERY much!
I have read all Iain M. Banks Sci Fi (most more than once), except this one!
It has been unavailable anywhere outside UK stores — not on Audible or Amazon (in audio format) — and could only be purchased from Eureopean sites if being downloaded from a Europeean web address.
I have been going crazy trying to find this. Finally the final remaining Banks SF audiobook is within my grasp. (I’ll hold my breath & pray for seeders!)
Thanks again!

It is a complete mystery where the number of seeders comes from. Every book that I have created a torrent for, has done the same thing.
I too love Iain Banks. Have you read his other books that are not sci-fi? They still have that dark humour within them that I really enjoy.

Nok,
Plenty of Seeders now (and I am really enjoying this book)!
To answer your question, Nok, I read Banks very first published novel — and I enjoyed some of the weirdness in that one, as well as the surprise ending.
But, certain elements seemed forced, to me (or, perhaps they seemed like the exact “formula” a new writer might use in an effort grab quick attention — and a cheap distinction from the pack of new writers — all desperate for one of the very few “sucess” slots available to fiction writers. (Sort of the way I felt about Bret Easton Ellis’ early work and fame.)
Obviously, I was very wrong. But, I figured I had him pegged as a sensationalist (albeit talented) fiction writer. Now, that’s a trait that one expects, and never deducts for, in SF; and Banks didn’t disappoint! Although, along the way, I discovered a very compassionate and humane writer; one who dazzled me with far more than just weird FX.
I was saddened by Banks sudden, death; but inspired by the dignity and grace he displayed throughout the very public period preceding it.
Now that I have my facts straight (and am about to finish all of Banks’ SF novels), I must go back and try some of his regular fiction. Can you recommend any books that you found particularly enjoyable?
Thanks again.

Hi Mooose
If you haven’t already read it Transition is a good novel. Published in the UK under Iain Banks but in the USA as Iain M Banks. It is borderline Sci-Fi.

Hello Mooose.
I’m pleased that you are enjoying this. I found the audiobook easier going than the paper book. The spellings used in the vernacular parts of the book prevented a reading rhythm for me, but I still liked it.
One of Iain Banks’ novels that holds a place in my heart is “The Crow Road.” It’s one of only a handful of books that have had me hooked from the first sentence. I mean, how can you read, “It was the day my Grandmother exploded,” and not just HAVE to read on?
All the best.
Nok
