Peter Frase argues that increasing automation and a growing scarcity of resources, thanks to climate change, will bring it all tumbling down. In Four Futures, Frase imagines how this post-capitalist world might look, deploying the tools of both social science and speculative fiction to explore what communism, rentism, socialism, and exterminism might actually entail. Could the current rise of real-life robocops usher in a world that resembles Ender’s Game? And sure, communism will bring an end to material scarcities and inequalities of wealth-but there’s no guarantee that social hierarchies, governed by an economy of “likes,” wouldn’t rise to take their place. A whirlwind tour through science fiction, social theory, and the new technologies already shaping our lives, Four Futures is a balance sheet of the socialisms we may reach if a resurgent Left is successful, and the barbarisms we may be consigned to if those movements fail.

Thanks for the up langdo, sounds interesting, but the casual assumption expressed in “sure, communism will bring an end to material scarcities and inequalities of wealth” seems to embody a terrifying lack of knowledge regarding history. Communist regimes have been responsible for famines resulting in over 60 million deaths over the last century. Sometimes arising from their inability to operate a functioning economy, however more often hunger was weaponised and targetted (“When there is not enough to eat people starve to death. It is better to let half of the people die so that the other half can eat their fill” - Chairman Mao, who made sure to carefully choose which half).
These are true “barbarisms”. The author may enjoy science fiction.
Just for balance, capitalist countries are not innocent in this regard. Britain caused or exploited famines in India, Ireland and Kenya, within their Empire, upon which the sun never set.
Once again, I appreciate the upload.

Caesar963 Hardly, granted there’s a lot of bad history, but Marxist theory like every other economic theory is ultimately about asset management when you set aside the politics. More importantly it address an inevitability most conservative economic theories ignore, which is the trend of technological progression tended towards ‘convenience’, the reduction of labour, that’s not science fiction. It is only a matter of time the population exceeds labour needs. Conservative talking point tended towards new tech means new jobs but that is only sustainable if the gains cover the loses, it doesn’t, less and less each decade. The current model of capitalism was never going to be perpetually sustainable.
It is very true that the communist regime are terrible… but I think you mistake their leaderships own inability to manage assets as a fault of the theory instead of the people involve. They did a lot of things that go against the theory as well. And that’s putting aside one thing Marx did get very wrong… which is what a revolution have the tendency to be.

Dude, the guy knows a lot more than you. If you actually read Marx you will see that communism is defined as moneyless, classless society. Those regimes you are referring to were “communist” in name only. Just like USA was a “democratic” and “free” back then even though the black Americans had to sit in the back of a bus and get up so white Americans could take their seat…
