In this thrilling and capacious book, Troy Vettese and Drew Pendergrass challenge the inertia of capitalism and the left alike and propose a radical plan to address climate disaster and guarantee the good life for all. Consumption in the Global North can’t continue unabated, and we must give up the idea that humans can fully control the Earth through technological “fixes” which only wreak further havoc.
Rather than allow the forces of the free market to destroy the planet, we must strive for a post-capitalist society able to guarantee the good life the entire planet. This plan, which they call Half-Earth Socialism, means we must:
• rewild half the Earth to absorb carbon emissions and restore biodiversity
• pursue a rapid transition to renewable energy, paired with drastic cuts in consumption by the world’s wealthiest populations
• enact global veganism to cut down on energy and land use
• inaugurate worldwide socialist planning to efficiently and equitably manage production
• welcome the participation of everyone—even you!
Accompanied by a climate-modelling website inviting readers to design their own “half earth,” Vettese and Pendergrass offer us a visionary way forward—and our only hope for a future.

Take your communist garbage and stuff it

I’m convinced this stuff is actually a plant.
By making your pitch to solve climate change “We’ll just do a genocide of HALF OF HUMANITY and make the other half live in miserable squalor” you make the capitalist position of “Let’s just continue to bake the planet and hope some genius will invent a magical supertech solution before we all die” look reasonable by comparison. It also serves to feed the conspiracy theories causing the resurgence of western fascism. This book exists so fascists can hold it up and go “Look! Here’s the Deep State’s plan, all laid out!”
The simple reality is we don’t have to do massive genocide and the complete destruction of our material economy to save the planet. We just have to throw the breaks on capitalism’s endless demand for continuous exponential growth. When serious environmentalists (i.e. not these chuds) talk about “cutting back overconsumption” they don’t mean making you live in a little 5′ cube with 30 other people living on a diet of earthworms. They mean “not producing millions more products than you actually intend to sell, so you can destroy most of them and dump them into the ocean.” It is only the billionaires who would have to learn to live with less.

Getting tired of hearing from ’scientists’ who haven’t done any modeling to actually see if their proposed solutions will work or not, or have any material association with the problem they’re supposedly designed to counter.
I’m all for their being fewer people and for an increase in wildlife. However, forests won’t do much about the carbon issue, forests only absorb carbon for about 20 years, after which they’re carbon neutral, but not net carbon absorbers. Our oxygen comes from the oceans, not from forests. Which is a main reason oceans absorb carbon and forests don’t after trees reach an average size where die off and decay equal new growth. Stop caring about trees in the context of climate change, worry about the oceans. They reduce ambient temperatures a bit, when not on fire, but they’re not a solution. Because they’re often on fire.
We don’t need cuts in consumption, well, for the top 5% of the population we do, but for everyone else? No. We need smarter ways to produce things rather than just exporting all the emission heavy industries overseas. That and right to repair laws.
We also don’t really need veganism. You want to be vegan, fine, that’s your choice, but stop trying to tie it up in climate change. The problem isn’t animals, or cows, its humans. Animals, in far higher populations, have existed on this planet with no ill effects. Until our industrial revolution. Did you know that plastic recycling is now almost entirely burning plastic? It is. The main issue isn’t cow farts, its humans.
The land used to raise farm animals is usually unsuitable for much of anything else. Which is why its used as grazing land. You can’t grow wheat on a rock mountain, but goats can graze there. If the populations that currently rely on raising animals have to stop doing so they’ll need food from somewhere else. And they can’t grow it locally, which is most of why they are raising sheep, goats, cattle, etc. So that food will then need to be transported to them, sometimes over hundred of miles. So now we’d have African or Palestinian or Chinese goat farmers who currently have the carbon foot print of a few goat farts but, under this proposal, would have the carbon footprint of an electric (best case) semi-truck, all the mining it took to get the minerals to make and maintain the semi truck, the road construction and maintenance needed for the semi-truck to get there and all the transport for all the middle men associated with that semi-truck. That’s not better than some goats.
We do need to do something about this issue, but I’m really sick of people acting as if the (usually selfish, first world and idealistic) life choices they can afford to make are the answer. I have yet to see any accurate data out of these people, I’ve seen cherry picked data and then when I, or anyone else says, “but what about x…” where x is a thing that breaks their thesis they get offended and refuse to talk to us anymore. Which isn’t what people confident in their own conclusions do.
CO2 emissions aren’t hard to stop. Quit letting corporations dodge environmental and emissions regulations by outsourcing to other countries, electrify main sources of ocean and ground transit and mandate work from home for all jobs that can be done from home. Then implement nuclear and other forms of alternative energy where possible. That’ll roughly halve emissions. https://www.epa.gov/ghgemissions/sources-greenhouse-gas-emissions
All this idealistic nonsense only serves to put sensible people off doing anything at all because they don’t want to be associated with the ninnies who suggest these solutions.

@micamica2 you may be right on this stuff being a plant. It would certainly explain why people promoting these theories are unwilling to engage in any for of discussion on their viability.
They’re either extremely daft or doing this on purpose.

This is the stupidest comment section I’ve ever seen. Can y’all please READ the book before you start complaining about it? There’s a lot of far right garbage on this site that I also find extremely questionable, but don’t complain about in the comments, because I haven’t read them. And FYI, the authors are both energy researchers at Harvard so I’m sure they’re a lot smarter than you guys are giving them credit for (and no, at no point do they promote genocide, I don’t know where the hell you guys got that from).
PS, The irony of whining about “people unwilling to engage in any form of discussion” while complaining about a book you haven’t even read is absolutely delicious ;)

Kill off half of humanity and worship “Mother Nature”… sounds like a cult.
August 12th, 2022
Didn’t that Thanos bloke want to “rationalise” the pop in the manner being discussed? Not sure if he was a vegan.
Such centralised, command economy planning as mentioned led to the devastating famines in Ukraine, China & elsewhere. Liberal democracy is still cool.
To “enact global veganism” does sound remarkably & suspiciously vague as a policy platform.
August 12th, 2022
Progressive Left Wing Propaganda/BS at it’s finest!
Xavier I’m shocked you even read this trash much less believe it!
August 12th, 2022
I am totally for global veganism, eating bugs, and leaving in pods, for you of course, so I can have all the good stuff while you are saving the planet.

Can’t understand why all this hysteria. It’s not as if there’s 12 hour waits for hospital treatment in one country and in another you’re near bankrupt if you fall ill. Or animals exist in utter misery chocked full of steroids to die in distress. Or thousands live on the streets while governments send billions to a corrupt regime in whose killings they’ve ignored for years. Or weapons are being sold to one country so it can kill indiscriminately in another, whose plight is ignored. Or wars are started for oil while pretending it’s for another reason, and countries that won’t subscribe to the prevailing ideology are sanctioned into poverty. Or energy is getting so pricey people can’t afford to heat their homes while energy companies rake in profits in billions every quarter. Or water is controlled by private companies that pay their executives millions in bonuses while consumers have to ration their use of a fundamental necessity of life. Or the richest 1% own half the world’s wealth. If things were that bad, it might be worth listening to an alternative, stead of screaming at anybody who has the temerity to suggest a change.
Just sayin’

Putin & his blood-soaked buddies have managed to save unimaginable billions on comparatively modest salaries (aggressive savers?) - so don’t be too worried abt the toll the sanctions might take on those lads. He thought the fall of the Soviet empire was also a terrible development, so go figure…
August 14th, 2022
Putin and his blood soaked buddies eh? Don’t let the truth get in the way of a half-turned phrase. That’s just parrotting what you’ve been told to think. The truth is far more complex. It needs researching with an open mind, not with one already made up.
August 14th, 2022
Food for thought. If climate change was real and they cut out all the carbon footprints we created .. What happens when all the trees, grass plants and nothing creates oxygen anymore, How do we live, since trees and plants create the oxygen we breath by taking in the carbons?
August 14th, 2022
So it’s beyond the bounds of possibility that you are merely parroting what you’ve been told to think, in particular by a set of brutally repressive, anti-democratic, human rights-violating regimes? I’ll set aside the issue of simple power worship as a known phenomenon, & the amoral “enemy of your enemy” factor.
On Putin: internal & external oppression & aggression; imprisonment, intimidation, poisoning & murder of political opponents, critics, journalists, dissidents, etc. Unimaginable corruption & operating a kleptocratic regime; did any of your research touch on these issues? His personal wealth & the murders? Any thought for all the victims at this point? Or does your research & complexity always end when it starts to get inconveniently truthful?
Is there anything that Putin (& the other regimes) could do that you could not see yourself supporting?
August 16th, 2022
Good book; a little extreme in some respects, but a better plan than any of the Green Growth books.
August 18th, 2022
Looks like a hopeful book. Capitalism has allowed us to create the greatest country in the world, look what Elon Musk did that no govt or NASA could have. Or Henry Ford, or even the snake Bill Gates. But its also tearing up this planet and we will see a huge population decline soon, as well as huge increases in cancer & disease because microplastics are found pretty much in everything now. Its not an easy answer, but over population is the biggest cause of most of this. We need to lower and maintain our population if humans are going to survive.

@SarahCon
dumbest argument I’ve ever seen on this site and that’s saying something.
@caesar963
“Is there anything that Putin (& the other regimes) could do that you could not see yourself supporting?”
Suffering fools to live.

@erouting
You didn’t even bother reading the blurb posted here before spouting off. For example, you claim that there is no point to the veganism argument since the land can’t be used for agriculture….. LIKE THEERE AREN’T OTHER USES FOR LAND FOR A SPECIES WITH 8 BILLION MEMBERS. Are you serious?
October 18th, 2022
This is some A-grade ooftum. Y’all the book talks about re-wilding half the earth, not killing half the earth–mist people tend to live in clusters, not spread out; i.e. you don’t gotta kill no one to re-wild

I am quite late to the party, but I think the earliest comments on this tread are quite well reasoned even if I don’t agree 100%. I didn’t read this and I am not going to. Whether this is it or not, what I hear the first few comments referencing is this Degrowth global cult who is most certainly advocating that we starve, in the dark while we all freeze to death. This moment is absolutely calling for the deaths of millions of people through the slow agonizing process of global GDP reduction under the guise of saving the planet.
You guys were right a year ago, these people REFUSE to debate their science in any way, shape or form. Anyone who questions them are called dangerous and spreaders of misinformation. This Degrowth movement is beyond inhumane, it is literally death cult as that is all that will happen if this is carried out. There is no evidence of this existential climate crisis and even UN is only citing a few degrees of change either way by either 2040 or 2050.
I was very shocked to see their predictions fail to backup or attempt to illustrate a catastrophic climate emergency. I not sure who makes the outlandish claims but the UN is advocating for excessive change for what they predict as modest GDP losses in 20 years from this climate “crisis”.
And somehow the answer becomes global climate marxism and Degrowth which is nothing more than the intentional and deliberate implosion of GDP.
I should be careful not to lump everyone in together. There are so many climate based rationals that have cropped up and I have no idea what all of interrelations are. In general, it is the advocating of measures so extreme as directly lead to the death of “half of humanity”. You guys were on it really early on.
