Rules for Being a Man:
Don’t cry
Love sport
Play rough
Drink beer
Don’t talk about feelings
But Robert Webb has been wondering for some time now: are those rules actually any use? To anyone?
Looking back over his life, from schoolboy crushes (on girls and boys) to discovering the power of making people laugh (in the Cambridge Footlights with David Mitchell), and from losing his beloved mother to becoming a husband and father, Robert Webb considers the absurd expectations boys and men have thrust upon them at every stage of life. Hilarious and heartbreaking, How Not to Be a Boy explores the relationships that made Robert who he is as a man, the lessons we learn as sons and daughters, and the understanding that sometimes you aren’t the Luke Skywalker of your life - you’re actually Darth Vader.

Nothing against Robert Webb or Phillipc96 but perhaps being male is not a sexually transmitted disease. Also, maybe we shouldn’t fill our kids’ heads and the public space with useless ideology and pseudo-thought which may further exacerbate suicide rates.
Being apologetically male is not a useful position to take - it doesn’t help your sons or daughters.
Have some self-respect and treat others with dignity, that’s how to be a man.

Great upload! Thanks! And the first comment has proven Robert’s point entirely!

Hi communitea, unfortunately that’s not an argument. There’s a higher bar for proof than that.
You have to prove what is wrong with dignity and respect, or what you don’t like about these qualities. What is wrong with battling against teen suicide? What is wrong with presenting a good, responsible role model when raising boys and girls?
I love Mitchell and Webb’s comedy, but if you take your philosophy of life from a comedian don’t be surprised when it turns out to be a joke.

@caesar963 …did you read the synopsis? It’s obviously about self acceptance even when who you are is at odds with societal expectations for your gender. It’s not an attack on being male, it’s an essay on being true to yourself even if who you are isn’t conventional by the standards of others.
Why it’s uncomfortable for some that different people exist and have different experiences than them, I will never understand.

Thanks jamesinco, it must have been be my fault for leaving such intolerant, abusive and reprehensible comments. I’ve done a little more than read the synopsis. Regrettably, you’re responding to arguments I didn’t make. What’s wrong with seeking a balance? Wouldn’t it be more desirable than the public discourse being a neverending process of beginning a movement and then the inevitable backlash? Why the prevalent agenda in the media, academia and politics of masculinty, of every shade, being a debased currency? Why even use a title like ‘How Not to be a Boy’ or ‘How Not to be a Girl’ for that matter, as if there is something shameful about being a girl? We all have a positive obligation to treat others with kindness, empathy and understanding, not to demonise, diminish or denigrate. In this context, your conclusion is a tad supercilious.
A mildly smarter person than I said something along the lines of: you should expound and follow a rule with the desire and object that it be a universal law. Should we seek to generalise and perpetuate a failed gender ideology from the 1950s and 1960s which could never comprehend or take account of human nature, psychology or gender?
This fatuous paradigm and its political baggage have been at the centre of a debate now for decades, its effect on western society has been an unmitigated disaster, poisoned as it is with discriminatory bile and logical fallacies.

“Hi communitea, unfortunately that’s not an argument.”
I love the people who hang out in the comments with internal rules of engagement and then get upset when other people have their own.
