“We need this book.” (Ibram X. Kendi, number-one New York Times best-selling author of How to Be an Anti-Racist)
The Atlantic staff writer and poet Clint Smith’s revealing, contemporary portrait of America as a slave-owning nation
Beginning in his hometown of New Orleans, Clint Smith leads the listener on an unforgettable tour of monuments and landmarks - those that are honest about the past and those that are not - that offer an intergenerational story of how slavery has been central in shaping our nation’s collective history, and ourselves.
It is the story of the Monticello Plantation in Virginia, the estate where Thomas Jefferson wrote letters espousing the urgent need for liberty while enslaving more than 400 people. It is the story of the Whitney Plantation, one of the only former plantations devoted to preserving the experience of the enslaved people whose lives and work sustained it. It is the story of Angola, a former plantation-turned-maximum-security prison in Louisiana that is filled with Black men who work across the 18,000-acre land for virtually no pay. And it is the story of Blandford Cemetery, the final resting place of tens of thousands of Confederate soldiers.
A deeply researched and transporting exploration of the legacy of slavery and its imprint on centuries of American history, How the Word Is Passed illustrates how some of our country’s most essential stories are hidden in plain view - whether in places we might drive by on our way to work, holidays such as Juneteenth, or entire neighborhoods like downtown Manhattan, where the brutal history of the trade in enslaved men, women, and children has been deeply imprinted.
Informed by scholarship and brought to life by the story of people living today, Smith’s debut work of nonfiction is a landmark of reflection and insight that offers a new understanding of the hopeful role that memory and history can play in making sense of our country and how it has come to be.

I wonder if this includes all the Negros that the Cherokee nation took on their so called trail of tears and later refused to free.. Or how about Oregon, the river of slaves, where the great indian slave market was held every Summer, or will it name the slave killing clubs named for all the slave/victims the owner could afford to kill to show his wealth… Here in BC, Canada, we only were able to stop indians from killing their slaves in the 1890…
The only people to stop slavery are White, just a few fact for the book.

Canadian intellectual @leadingnorth struggles to use the basic resources of the English language in the conventional ways. Good stuff. To @yoshq: thanks for sharing.

What a stupid book. Niggies account for 13% of the population yet commit 55% of all murders and 70% of all felonies yet we’re supposed to believe they’re the victims of “the system.” What a scam. The rest of us are the victims of niggies.

bunch of white snowflakes up in this comment section being racist as fuck. Havn’t even read the book and are so triggered by it. Throwing out old cherry picked stats from 2000 with zero context thinking they are the smartest person in the world. Riddle me this idiot, if drug use between whites and blacks are the same why are blacks significantly more represented in the incarnation rates for drug use? Why are the exoneration rates for blacks significantly higher than all other groups? Why are punishment suggestions for blacks with similar history and backgrounds significantly harsher than their white peers? its almost like there is a broader context to the system than one stat you morons pull out of your ass every time you idiots are triggered. If you genuinely want to learn and not continue to be an idiot, and a pawn used by reactionary pundits like ben shapiro and steven crowder and the like. I highly suggest reading the New Jim Crow https://audiobookbay.lu/abss/the-nnew-jim-crow-michelle-alexander-3/ and Color of Law https://audiobookbay.lu/abss/richaprd-rothstein-the-color-of-law/ . Real world issues are more complicated than a single or a handful of stats or a single debate with figurehead that has had years of media training that goes to campuses to dunk on unprepared college students. Educate yourself please. I wish you the best. :)
