“My new favorite book of all time.” –Bill Gates
“A terrific book…[Pinker] recounts the progress across a broad array of metrics, from health to wars, the environment to happiness, equal rights to quality of life.” –The New York Times
The follow-up to Pinker’s groundbreaking The Better Angels of Our Nature presents the big picture of human progress: people are living longer, healthier, freer, and happier lives, and while our problems are formidable, the solutions lie in the Enlightenment ideal of using reason and science.
Is the world really falling apart? Is the ideal of progress obsolete? In this elegant assessment of the human condition in the third millennium, cognitive scientist and public intellectual Steven Pinker urges us to step back from the gory headlines and prophecies of doom, which play to our psychological biases. Instead, follow the data: In seventy-five jaw-dropping graphs, Pinker shows that life, health, prosperity, safety, peace, knowledge, and happiness are on the rise, not just in the West, but worldwide. This progress is not the result of some cosmic force. It is a gift of the Enlightenment: the conviction that reason and science can enhance human flourishing.
Far from being a naïve hope, the Enlightenment, we now know, has worked. But more than ever, it needs a vigorous defense. The Enlightenment project swims against currents of human nature–tribalism, authoritarianism, demonization, magical thinking–which demagogues are all too willing to exploit. Many commentators, committed to political, religious, or romantic ideologies, fight a rearguard action against it. The result is a corrosive fatalism and a willingness to wreck the precious institutions of liberal democracy and global cooperation.
With intellectual depth and literary flair, Enlightenment Now makes the case for reason, science, and humanism: the ideals we need to confront our problems and continue our progress.

Will I be able to listen to this? Pinker in audio book format can be difficult. Still, it is really appreciated.
Anybody else think non-fiction is harder to digest than fiction when listening to an audio book?

yes, dense ideas require focused concentration, and driving or commuting or doing chores are not ideal. Bandwidth issue for the brain. Conversational podcasts are fine - perhaps only 1 idea to digest per minute. Pinker might be 3 or 4.

I generally listen to books while playing a mindless game (any non-intensive puzzle will do). I find that this is a good recipe for listening to even very dense books. The only real difference in my reading patterns for books like this is that I’ll take more frequent breaks in reading to give the thoughts a chance to digest and consolidate.
The tradeoff is that books with higher information density are also usually very, very clearly written and narrated for whatever reason. This allows me to read them at higher speeds than usual without a comprehension loss.

I can’t follow a knitting pattern while listening to a non fiction audiobook. I can drive, and I have found that a wonderful way to learn a language. For non fiction audio, even in podcast form, I need to be more interested. It needs a good reader, much more than fiction does, I find. With a good reader, I can listen to, say, A Short History of Nearly Everything, again and again and again. I would only ever have read it once. This way I get more out of it each time.

My starting speed for nonfiction is 2x. Lol
