What starts as a terse conversation between a teenager and an old man turns into wonderful relationship that re-imagines Sherlock Holmes as he nestles securely into his solitary retirement in Sussex. Of course, it isn’t as solitary as he would wish: Mrs. Hudson keeps her long-time charge company and the myriad of guests that jostle for Holmes’s attention keep him busy indeed. But it is the curious relationship he develops with this teenager girl that will define his life during the years of the Great War and into the Roaring Twenties.
Mary Russell has her demons. Struggling to find herself in a world defined by the atrocities of war and her own tragic past, the curious man she nearly runs into when she is fifteen sets her on a path that will irrevocably intertwine her life with that of the greatest amateur detective to ever live.
This is the whole Sherlock Holmes and Mary Russell series to date. A magnificent read and wholly worthy of being in the pantheon of Sherlock Holmes adventures, though ultimately these stories feature Mary Russell. Her voice is a dramatic contrast to the sometimes-surly Dr. Watson, affectionately known by Mary as Uncle John. Mycroft Holmes is also a big part of the series.
