Nothing Ever Dies: Vietnam and the Memory of War - Viet Thanh Nguyen

All wars are fought twice, the first time on the battlefield, the second time in memory. From the author of the Pulitzer Prize–winning novel The Sympathizer comes a searching exploration of the conflict Americans call the Vietnam War and Vietnamese call the American War—a conflict that lives on in the collective memory of both nations.
From a kaleidoscope of cultural forms—novels, memoirs, cemeteries, monuments, films, photography, museum exhibits, video games, souvenirs, and more—Nothing Ever Dies brings a comprehensive vision of the war into sharp focus. At stake are ethical questions about how the war should be remembered by participants that include not only Americans and Vietnamese but also Laotians, Cambodians, South Koreans, and Southeast Asian Americans. Too often, memorials valorize the experience of one’s own people above all else, honoring their sacrifices while demonizing the “enemy”—or, most often, ignoring combatants and civilians on the other side altogether. Visiting sites across the United States, Southeast Asia, and Korea, Viet Thanh Nguyen provides penetrating interpretations of the way memories of the war help to enable future wars or struggle to prevent them.
Drawing from this war, Nguyen offers a lesson for all wars by calling on us to recognize not only our shared humanity but our ever-present inhumanity. This is the only path to reconciliation with our foes, and with ourselves. Without reconciliation, war’s truth will be impossible to remember, and war’s trauma impossible to forget.

Great, thank you.

The American War on Vietam.

The contentious nomenclature is reminiscent of British imperialists dissembling their own appalling abuses with terms such as “the Irish problem.”
There’s a great deal of these sleazy, hypocritical characters still on the scene, with their feigned amnesia, in addition to genuine racist ignorance.

Thanks so much for this <3

And here is Caesar, still blathering on, trying to make everything about the one thing he likes to talk about.

It’s an object lesson in the abuse of language, as mentioned in the description - fully contextualised. It happened globally, mostly because of your brutish empire.
What are you actually talking about?
Unless you really are one of those unreconstructed imperialist scumbags?

@caesar963
No, caesar, I’m not “one of those unreconstructed imperialist scumbags”.
That is merely your single, only lump of accusatory faeces that you routinely fling at people who call you out. I’m used to it. Everybody is used to it.
Get new material.

I criticise & condemn the racism, genocide, imperialism, concentration camps, torture & slavery - & you automatically make your hysterical attacks. Every single time. You are what you do. That’s your only move. How does that not make you a racist, imperialistic scumbag? Another absurd anachronism?

“most often, ignoring combatants and civilians on the other side altogether.”
When generation after generation tell their kids they are “exceptional” just because, you end up with a nation of obese lazy princes & princesses who treat the rest of the world like they are servants.
America is almost over - broke, in debt, lazy, fat, stupid, uncouth & divided divided divided. And the most retard climate deniers in the world.
In June it was a killer heatwave with record temps 49.6C = 121F now we have RECORD SMASHING floods & record loss of infrastructure.

It’s coming for you & yours no matter where you are & decades of denial is going to kill your kids & grand kids. Deniers have blood on their hands.

Just from a style perspective, I don’t think you can abusively list off a whole load of negative qualities, with nasty epithets like “retard,” “obese,” “lazy,” (x2) “fat,” (again) & “stupid,” - & then primly complain of them also being “uncouth” into the bargain.
It’s also the poorest & most vulnerable who will be hit by the consequences of climate change first, as their homes sink beneath them.
And if you imagine that only America is responsible for this, refer with alacrity to how COP26 was essentially sabotaged (as it always would be) by the ravenous coal-burning addictions of China & India. Many hands, much blood.
