On 11 September 2001, our world changed. The West’s response to 9/11 has morphed into a period of exception. Governments have decided that the rule of law and human rights are often too costly.
In On Liberty, Shami Chakrabarti - who joined Liberty, the UK’s leading civil rights organization, on 10 September 2001 - explores why our fundamental rights and freedoms are indispensable.
She shows, too, the unprecedented pressures those rights are under today. Drawing on her own work in high-profile campaigns, from privacy laws to antiterror legislation, Chakrabarti shows the threats to our democratic institutions and why our rights are paramount in upholding democracy.

It’s a difficult moral conundrum; how can Western, liberal democracies, with a hard-won tradition of human rights, defend themselves from fanatical terror?

She should stick to the politics of her own country. The US was never and should never be a democracy. Democracy is simply the subjugation of the minority by the majority.

Fanatical terror?
Do you get sad when seeing photos of 9/11?
Do you get sad when seeing thousands being bombed in numerous countries?
It’s cute if you claim that the US is fighting terror. Civilian deaths have not resulted in the jailing of soldiers/presidents. Therefore, the jailing of Al-Qaeda, ISIS + their leaders is not required.
There is definitely more security in the west after 9/11. It has little to nothing to do with terrorism. Maybe a permanent arms ban would be a good start. Until all of the global terrorists, which include too many countries, agree that all forms of violence and murder are treated the same, it is requested that 9/11-style events continue to occur.
Otherwise, how would stupid people know to cry about ISIS? They are a threat to them in the middle of some dump in the centre of their country. No one cares about them, and they need to feel special. Snowflakes.

Why are you losing the rag, lao? I was posing a pertinent question in the context of the premise of the book. I live in a country which is no stranger to fanatical terror (and State-terror, provided by the neighbouring State). Who wants to see human beings being bombed or gassed? It’s civilians who suffer in these dirty conflicts. Why are you sneering at people because of where they live? Do you think that they are worth less than you? Why are you so sure that they are stupid? Can you see their minds?
