For centuries, the land of Palestine has been fought over by competing faiths, nations and empires. Today, even the name itself has become a battleground for conflicting Israeli and Palestinian visions of the country’s past. Israelis treat the very notion of ‘Palestine’ as a modern invention, while rooting their own nation’s history in the ancient Kingdom of Israel. But, as Nur Masalha shows, the concept of Palestine (derived from the biblical ‘Philistine’) is one which can be traced to the beginning of recorded history, grounded in a distinctive Palestinian culture that long predates the Old Testament narrative of Israelite conquest. Beginning with the earliest references to the area in ancient texts, Masalha explores how the concept of Palestine and its associated identity has evolved over thousands of years, from the Bronze Age to the present day. Drawing on a rich body of sources and the latest archaeological evidence, Masalha shows how Palestine’s past has been distorted and mythologised by Biblical lore and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In the process, this magisterial work uncovers the true depth and complexity of Palestine’s millennia-old heritage, and represents the authoritative account of the country’s history.

Thank you!

This “magisterial” work knows nothing (save trickery) about the the bronze age or the Philistines. The Philistines were what was known then as the “sea people” who invaded Egypt and Israel and were in constant war with the Egyptians, the Israelites and the Cannanites, before being confined to Gaza and a bit of surroundings, which was called the Kingdom of Philistia. Palestine was an ensuing invention or pseudonym of the other invaders, including first the Romans and later the Islamic Arabians who called the place Filastine. So present day Palestinians have to decide: were they Philistines? Then Gaza is Palestine. Were they Arabs? Then they invaded and occupied the territory in the 8th century AD. They do not seem to make up their mind. And so does the above writer.

I’ve got no skin in the game, but it seems odd that the arab muslim culture which sets itself apart from anything other than supposedly ‘revealed’ truth from mohammed claims continuity from pagan non-arab forebears. Isn’t it amazing what they will do to try and establish some superior claim to the land.

Just another historic revisionist take to the pile. The history of the Palestinian people as a distinct group is recent, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

Shorter @honeytoad:
“Are my preconceived notions about the Muslim world being a homogenous horde complete nonsense and in fact, the history of the Muslim world is as complex and contradictory as that of any other human society?
Nope, they are just playing tricks on me.”

An important work, the fruit of many years of research, which shows the falsehood of many of the above comments. Perhaps people should read the book before denouncing it.

A majority of those claiming said land nowadays have “less than 2-3 percent Middle Eastern DNA.”
The wealthiest of them, the Ashkenazim, are not even related to that group, for the most part. So it’s even more absurd. They are a converted tribe of merchants, ‘Gok-Turks,’ which are a blend of Turkish and East Asian Warriors which were converted to Judaism outside of Israel. So even with all of the mythical trifling, the most powerful, wealthy portion of the Israelis and their diaspora literally has zero claim to that land, because they are not even historically related to it.
Goes for most of the rest of them as well. The whole reason people are ACTUALLY fighting over that land has little to nothing to do with religion, actually- and everything to do with geopolitics, with holding ground on the Eurasian land mass, and then using the religious diatribe as a dichotomy to galvanize the Zionist plot to build ‘Ersatz Israel’ in the region, claiming the resources there.

The ancient Jewish people wouldn’t accept Roman hegemony so they got exiled almost two thousand years ago. That doesn’t mean they have the right to colonize and treat Palestinians like a permanent underclass.
The only peaceful future for Palestine/Israel Is a multicultural democracy. One state with two different cultures isn’t unheard of. What Israel is doing in their country is hurting everyone, including the US. We may as well make ISrael the 51st state since it couldn’t function without American largesse.
The Israeli reactionary groups are in panic mode as well due to the growing empathy for PAlestinians in the West. May as well accept the fact that unless they exterminate every Palestinian there won’t be peace until an agreement is reached.
