Renowned and beloved as a prizewinning novelist, Dara Horn has also been publishing penetrating essays since she was a teenager. Often asked by major publications to write on subjects related to Jewish culture—and increasingly in response to a recent wave of deadly antisemitic attacks—Horn was troubled to realize what all of these assignments had in common: she was being asked to write about dead Jews, never about living ones. In these essays, Horn reflects on subjects as far-flung as the international veneration of Anne Frank, the mythology that Jewish family names were changed at Ellis Island, the blockbuster traveling exhibition Auschwitz, the marketing of the Jewish history of Harbin, China, and the little-known life of the “righteous Gentile” Varian Fry. Throughout, she challenges us to confront the reasons why there might be so much fascination with Jewish deaths, and so little respect for Jewish lives unfolding in the present.
Horn draws upon her travels, her research, and also her own family life—trying to explain Shakespeare’s Shylock to a curious ten-year-old, her anger when swastikas are drawn on desks in her children’s school, the profound perspective offered by traditional religious practice and study—to assert the vitality, complexity, and depth of Jewish life against an antisemitism that, far from being disarmed by the mantra of “Never forget,” is on the rise. As Horn explores the (not so) shocking attacks on the American Jewish community in recent years, she reveals the subtler dehumanization built into the public piety that surrounds the Jewish past—making the radical argument that the benign reverence we give to past horrors is itself a profound affront to human dignity.

not sure that’s even true, most people don’t think about people in terms of their race, gender or creed, at least not white people but what always seems to be missing in these debates about antisemitism is why, why do people dislike them so much? That part is invariably ignored or it’s unconvincingly explained away as envy or inherent hate for the Other. Yet we have ethnicities in the West, p.ex. Indians or the Chinese, doing better than the majority population by key metrics, they’re just as much an Other as the Jews, but they’ve never inspired negative sentiments the way the Jews have. Obviously they’ve been treated badly and discriminated against in the past but haven’t been singled out, no conspiracy theories have emerged, how come?

Maybe if Zionists quit making a million videogames and films about WWII Germany, and quit using an imagined Metaphysical Superiority as a way to keep mythologizing their movement, through dredging up past wars that show ‘anti-semitic hatred . . . maybe if they learned to man up and move on, respect others who’ve dealt with comparable or worse- it wouldn’t be this way. But instead you have endless books churning out like this, as the Jewish Norman Finkelstein, author of ‘The Holocaust Industry’ called ‘Crocodile Tears.’ And they are. Who is this? Some spoiled intellectual brat, plenty of money, I’m sure, whining about what isn’t anything really uniquely Jewish in the end, but a universal phenomenon- that when people die, especially during wars, or when they were talented, heros, etc- they become mythologized, so it is brought up over and over. That happens to everyone- their revolutionaries, martyrs, etc. Not just Jews- that’s self-absorbed to think so. The rest is actually a greedy, self-imposed protection racket, not coming from Jews or Judaism, but Zionism, which is Jewish but extends beyond Jews, into other religions, and constantly dredges up ‘anti-semitism’ for militant propaganda, mercenary-identity purposes- at the cost of everyone, not just Jews.
