The Happy Atheist - P.Z. Myers
Shared by:daenigma100
From the author of one of the web’s most popular science blogs, The Happy Atheist takes on religious fanaticism with all the gleeful disrespect it deserves. A small, fearless book that takes aim at big, stupid targets–and nails them.
For the last several years, PZ Myers, writing the blog Pharyngula, has entertained millions of readers every month with his infectious love of evolutionary science and his equally infectious disdain for creationism, biblical literalism, “intelligent design” theory, and other products of godly illogic. While PZ does not accept the common atheist argument that religion necessarily makes people do evil, violent things, he does think that, most of the time, it makes them believe in the truly ridiculous–which is exactly what he skewers in this riotously funny book. In fact, The Happy Atheist is so outrageous, it’s the only book about religion anyone should take seriously.

Prepare to have all your teenage butthurt against your religious parents vindicated in a cliche’d british accent, so it sounds smart. And don’t bother actually researching anything because this is the only book you will ever need. The blurb even says so!

Prepare to notice that Benjamin McLean has no criticism of substance in his review.

Many thanks, daenigma. I’ve been wanting to read this one.

I love the Pharyngula blog!
I don’t know what B. McLean’s agenda is, but having read Pharyngula at least weekly for years and years Myers is hardly vindictive and never shrill.
The narrator is Aron Ra, and he is most certainly not British; nor does he sport a faux English accent.
*shrugs*
He is snarky as heck, but it seems all in good fun. Of course being a fellow traveler of Myers.’ my opinion is of course weighted towards rationality.
Thanks for the up, daenigma100!!

Benjamin, maybe you should research the book before you criticize it. It is written by an American author and read by an American narrator. No British accents at all, cliched or otherwise.

The irony of someone belittling an atheist book on Christmas day while currently searching for pirated books is delicious.

You’d think deterministic faiths - including so-called “Atheism” - would let the world go on as foreshadowed by God, by Devil or by mere Matter; instead, their devotees, including PZ Meyers are somehow different from the rest of us. Relentlessly, ruthlessly, they force their creeds upon us. How come these people lack the humor and humility that keep us human? What strange defect to think one knows God’s will, Matter’s dialectical determination, or how his brain works to fool him, all under the guise of pseudo-science!

Great book. I’ve had the dead tree version since it came out.
I can understand the christians not liking it - requires a sense of humor, as well as the ability and willingness to actually think critically.
