A fascinating, bottom-up exploration of contemporary Russian politics that sheds new light on why Putin’s grip on power is more fragile then we think
What do ordinary Russians think of Putin? Who are his supporters? And why might their support now be faltering? Alive with the voices and experiences of ordinary Russians and elites alike, Sam Greene and Graeme Robertson craft a compellingly original account of contemporary Russian politics.
Telling the story of Putin’s rule through pivotal episodes such as the aftermath of the “For Fair Elections” protests, the annexation of Crimea, and the War in Eastern Ukraine, Greene and Robertson draw on interviews, surveys, social media data, and leaked documents to reveal how hard Putin has to work to maintain broad popular support, while exposing the changing tactics that the Kremlin has used to bolster his popularity. Unearthing the ambitions, emotions, and divisions that fuel Russian politics, this book illuminates the crossroads to which Putin has led his country and shows why his rule is more fragile than it appears.

I might be in the minority on this one, but I don’t think that Putin bloke is entirely trustworthy. His motives czar dubious, at best.

Ha ha ha Mr Caesar963 … I gotta be honest here when I say that although I don’t normally agree with your views (especially on evolution and unintelligent design), this is probably one of the few times that we’re of the same view. Cheers.

Python! You’ll be relieved ro know that I’m fully on board with the theory of evolution (have a well-thumbed copy of Darwin’s magnum opus on the bookshelf). All of my other views are just as innocuous, cute & cuddly. Good luck to you!

For all that’s said of Hillary, She was THE ONLY ONE and vocal about it since ‘99 - 2000 who smelled and called his bullSh… quite on the money. Still he went on to dupe good ole Bush 43 so much so he said “I looked in a man’s eyes and saw a kindred spirit.” lol smh. Hillary was the closest to have had him cornered and had she just a little more support and time, would’ve had Putin forced into exile or bludgeoned by his own ppl circa 2011. Here lies the origins of his very real hatred for her…hence 2016 and something about cyber hacking.

@ed - I thought for a second that you were referring to the vile, villainous, Vlad the Emailer (that’s sort of like the “Impaler?” What with Hillary, and everything?) as the Grand Architect!
Evolutionary theory is viable, but it doesn’t (cannot) contradict theism. They’re separate spheres of inquiry. I remember a Jesuit biology professor exasperatedly explaining that evolution is only a problem for “some protestants” (step away from the literalism!). Biologists within the Catholic Church were working towards a similar understanding as Darwin during the 19th Century. It was an idea that was “in the ether” as it were, because of the uncovering of the fossil record.
The pursuit of all knowledge is truly a beautiful thing - per aspera ad astra & sapere aude, and all that good stuff.
However, the internet (as ever) is alight with half-baked misunderstandings and invective - when it should be otherwise. It’s not edifying to see that reflected on a book site - your own uploads are happily swimming against that tide, glad to say (Nabokov, Murdoch, Rush, Schiff - I mean, are you trying to dumb us ALL the way down?!).

Who are all these misleading books disparaging russia for? Why tell the people in the US Putin is much weaker than he is when the US would need to rethink its entire military and put the country under martail law if it wanted to compete. If these journalist loved america like they say they do they should start by telling the truth instead of writing books to make people feel good.
