From the expert who understands both sides of one of the world’s most complex, controversial conflicts, a modern-day Guide for the Perplexed-a primer on Israel and the Israeli-Palestinian issue.
“Can’t you just explain the Israel situation to me? In, like, 10 minutes or less?” This is the question Daniel Sokatch is used to answering on an almost daily basis. As the head of the New Israel Fund, which is dedicated to equality and democracy for all Israelis, not just Jews, Sokatch is supremely well-versed on the Israeli conflict.
Can We Talk About Israel? is the story of that conflict, and of why so many people feel so strongly about it without actually understanding it very well at all. It is an attempt to grapple with a century-long struggle between two peoples that both perceive themselves as (and indeed are) victims. And it’s an attempt to explain why Israel (and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict) inspires such extreme feelings-why it seems like Israel is the answer to “what is wrong with the world” for half the people in it, and “what is right with the world” for the other half.
Complete with engaging illustrations by Christopher Noxon,
Can We Talk About Israel? is an easy-to-read yet penetrating and original look at the history and basic contours of one of the most complicated conflicts in the world

Outside of lonely planet or rough guides which have the grace to rate the beaches I’ve never found another book useful regards Israel, they’re obsessed with which beard or hat is the best beard or hat

Only the Palestinians are justified in using force to protect themselves. Israel is using the same process the Americans used to rid themselves of the native population.

Well said @geehan. Countries like Burkina Faso, South Sudan, Benin and Malawi are much larger and deserve more attention.

The millennia-long war on the Jewish people, both within & without their homeland.

Caesar, that the Jewish people are in the top 3 most persecuted of all time list does not in anyway justify the truly despicable acts committed by those in charge and their American financiers. It’s a truly dismal tale.
The British lefty need to wake up and realize that our own Country is the priority right now. Stockholm syndrome voters and Corrupt, untouchable Government is not a strong position to start moralizing from.

While we’re attributing blame in this context, we shouldn’t ignore Hamas et al.
I’m sure we all wish the British well, but I’m not certain what they have to do with this, specifically.

Palestine—that name comes from the Philistines. The Philistines were not Arabs or even Semitic, but part of the Sea Peoples, mainly Mycenaean Greeks who invaded Egypt and the whole of the Easter Mediterranean during the late Bronze Age Collapse (about 1300 BC) where they founded five settlements (Gaza, Asccalon, Ashdod, Ekron and Gat). They were in constant struggle and interaction with the neighboring Israelites, Cannanites and Egyptians until they were finally confined to the State of Gaza, which became their homeland. So, Gaza was/is Palestine. What was called later Palestine by the Romans and Filastin by the Islamic Arabs was no more than a stretch over the geographic frame by dominating Imperial powers of the day to hedge in the Israelites.

Can we talk about the USS Liberty? Can we talk about the Lavon Affair?
