The world is becoming less religious. Since 2007, there has been a pervasive decline in religious belief and most of the world’s people now say that God is less important in their lives than they said he was in the quarter century before 2007.
Many factors contributed to this dramatic shift, but as Inglehart shows, certain ones stand out. For centuries, virtually all major religions sternly discouraged divorce, abortion, homosexuality, contraception, and any other form of sexual behavior not linked with reproduction. These norms were necessary for societies to survive when facing high infant mortality and low life expectancy. Recent technological advances have greatly increased life expectancy and cut infant mortality to a tiny fraction of its historic levels, making these norms no longer necessary for societal survival. These norms require repressing strong natural urges, but, since they present traditional norms as absolute values, most religions strongly resist change. The resulting tension, together with the fact that rising existential security has made people less dependent on religion, opened the way for an exodus from religion. Utilizing a massive global database, Inglehart analyzes the conditions under which religiosity collapses, and explores its implications for the future.

A fascinating area. If current trends continue, Islam, which is experiencing massive growth, will be the world’s largest religion by 2070. Now, Catholicism specifically, is the largest religion in global history. However, Islam’s increase is such that, in numerical terms, it will overtake all of Christianity (parity by 2050). And that’s with the concurrent widespread growth of Christianity itself.
It’s a story of decline in parts of the West, which disproportionately skews our perspective. But many things are declining in the West, especially the population.
Consequently, any decline in specifically formal, organised religion in Western countries is of negligible significance, in terms of the world picture. Bluntly, your world view is only important if you reproduce. Anything else is moot. And folks who are optimistic for the future tend to have kids.

Religion is not shrinking fast enough. The sooner people stop letting myth and superstitions run their lives the better for all humanity. Fewer fanatics the better. Then getting Tumpsters to see reality is the next step.

With Trumpsters its literally the same thing. They are a religion, plain and simple. OR the very least, a cult. They have all the traits, they have progressed to the state of denialism (ie they know he lies and does all these awful things but willfull ignore and override anything they dont like because they think its all in the the service of the great work he is doing, bla bla). What we need is cult deprogrammers or something, but I fear many of these folks cant be saved. Anyone who has ever tried to have a polite civil conversation with a Trump supporter knows how quickly they become triggered zealots who start spitting out absurdly irrational sermons about how great their leader is. You have about as much of a chance of convincing a priest that God is evil or a Muslim that Mohammed was just a street hustler and a pimp.

The author description of the basis for religious prohibitions against Divo

divorce, and all the rest, is so naive and simplistic that I seriously doubt he has anything intelligent to say.

Good riddance to bad rubbish!

What comes next? We’re already seeing it now. In 1943 people were fighting to end the tyrannical rule of a mass murderer in Germany. After he was defeated, another mass murderer ruled in Russia for decades, killing millions. Today, a boy who thinks he’s a girl, believes he has been assaulted if someone doesn’t call him “she”.

Lisiva5995, turn off fox and facebook for a week. go outsdie.
you are not under attack like you are being told.
you are being lied to, it makes you much easier to control.
These scenarios you describe are fearmongering, they line up just enough with your preconceptions and preexisting biases to sound true and reaffirm your beliefs.
It’ll be ok. You are in the minority and don’t even know it. as a Christian, you never were a majority.
The god of the gaps is slowly fading away to truth and reason. its only a matter of time.

Ain’t we all ultimately in a minority? Of 1?
Don’t ideologically positive anti-theists regularly rehearse their bigoted preconceptions and preexisting biases? To reaffirm their ideologically positive beliefs?
To the numbers - these are indeed (tony) stark: according to the researches of sociologists Keysar & Navarro-Rivera, and their review of numerous global studies on atheism, there are 450-500 m positive atheists and agnostics worldwide (7% of world pop).
That’s the upper estimate. Alterna-findings put the figure at half that total (China & Russ being the major contributors).
Which is essentially margin of error territory.
And future projections? As I said, an interesting area: the numbers of positive materialists is expected to decline further, both proportionately & numerically. It all comes down to reproduction. However, I’d caution that these are projections. Albeit with the best data.
Quite apart from the whole Abrahamic crowd, there are well in excess of twice as many Hindus on the planet as there are atheist materialists. And possibly as many as 4 times as many.
Like I said, don’t allow what’s happening in parts of the West to disproportionately skew your perspective. With our massive population decline (& IQ decline) the future is likely to have far less use for us than we p’haps imagine. However, we do have facebook. And twatter.
But still, be of good cheer! (And call us when u hit that last lock)

Will be interesting to see how he measures religiosity confidently enough to publish an entire book about his findings… There are notable issues with the usual measurements.

(I should qualify that I do understand that the book’s purpose is for theory building, but when you publish a whole book as opposed to a 20-30 page journal article, you expect some rigorous empirical analysis to accompany the theory building. Proper variable specification and quality measurement are paramount to convincing empirical analysis.)
