And in 2014, Ukrainian revolutionaries raided the palace of their ousted president and found a zoo of peaCensoreds, gilded toilets, and a floating restaurant modeled after a Spanish galleon. Unlikely as it might seem, there is a thread connecting these events, and Rachel Maddow follows it to its crooked source: the unimaginably lucrative and equally corrupting oil and gas industry.
With her trademark black humor, Maddow takes us on a switchback journey around the globe, revealing the greed and incompetence of Big Oil and Gas along the way, and drawing a surprising conclusion about how and why the Russian government hacked the 2016 US election. Chevron, BP, and a host of other industry players get their star turn, most notably ExxonMobil and the deceptively well-behaved Rex Tillerson. The oil and gas industry has weakened democracies in developed and developing countries, fouled oceans and rivers, and propped up authoritarian thieves and killers. But being outraged at it is, according to Maddow, “like being indignant when a lion takes down and eats a gazelle. You can’t really blame the lion. It’s in her nature.”
Blowout is a call to contain the lion: to stop subsidizing the wealthiest businesses on Earth, to fight for transparency, and to check the influence of the world’s most destructive industry and its enablers. The stakes have never been higher. As Maddow writes, “Democracy either wins this one or disappears.”

True. There are bad anchors on both the left and right, but she’s in her own universe of incompetence and outright bias.
Well, maybe that’s not quite true. Hannity and Olberman and O’Reilly and Colbert, (If you can call Colbert a newsman - certainly he sees himself as such, despite hiding behind the “It’s just comedy, folks!” schtick)
Future generations will regard these people poorly.

Colbert can be very funny though. Arguably the old show was funnier. I used to watch that instead of the “news” when I lived in the States. Why is everyone always shouting on your news shows? Are they terrified that people will switch off, or something?

I’m a little more than halfway through the listen of “Blowout” (also bought the eBook), and she is building a truly compelling case against the energy industry as the prime mover of much of our political chaos-Putin is trying to run a one-crop, non-diversified economy (kleptocracy)offering nothing other than the destructive products of commodity extraction. When was the last Russian microwave oven, car, or even oven mitt on sale at Walmart?
“Drift”, her previous book was an outstanding indictment of America’s hypocritical relationship with our military: people love to say “thank you for your service” in airports, which is to say they are selfishly grateful to those in uniform in the same way they regard other distasteful services, like trash collection.
Ps-As a veteran, you can thank me by being worthy of my service-sadly, about 30 percent of you simply are not, as demonstrated by the usual stupid negative comments.

I disagree with apollo60. The narration style is flashy but the material is exhaustively well reported and unfortunately difficult to slog through. It’s like a big fat college text book… Feel like I’m cramming for an exam. The POV is so broad and complex I find myself longing for a throughline to carry me forward. Part of the problem probably lies in the wealth of the parties she is writing about and how many are alive… Maddow is a lawyer and the book sounds lawyerized. The characters seem flat. Would love to hear opinions from others here who actually read the book, particularly if you have recommendations for other publications which cover similar ground.

Previous comment written when I was about seven hours in … The book picks up terrific speed when she starts writing about Russian spies, hacking etc…to such a degree that at about 9 hours 20 minutes it there’s a 90 sec interlude to play Pussy Riot’s Putin song in its entirety definitely not textbookish. The lively bits more than compensate for the dry stretches that read like she is striving to be libel suit proof.

What a bunch of trolls. Rachel is the one of the most UNBIAS and truthful anchors on TV. If you think otherwise, you are living in the fantasy world of faux news. Just because you don’t like facts and truth, it doesn’t mean the information is fake or the person delivering it is bias.
