A nice little essay, with some good observations dotted throughout. Some of the advices have dated somewhat. He used to reference the habits of his manservants, maidservants, servants born to his house, and the like snobbery. Ray Monk writes trenchantly about this aspect of Russell, and, quite revealingly, the great man’s unhappy emotional life.
Although, for British readers this snobbery feature might not be very jarring. That form of toxic class consciousness still anachronistically pervades their society to an enormous degree.

I try to like all of Russell’s books:- if only because anyone who irritated T S Eliot as much as Russell did just has to be worth listening to. But this one seems dated, complacent, and flaccid. I suspect Russell - like Shakespeare and Byron - is a much better critic than he is a mentor.
But I’m willing to give this another spin. Thanks Aranya99.
