Random House presents the audiobook edition of The Victorians, written and read by Jacob Rees-Mogg.
They built a nation. Now it’s our turn.
Many associate the Victorian era with austere social attitudes and filthy factories. But in this bold and provocative book, Jacob Rees-Mogg - leading Tory MP and prominent Brexit advocate - takes up the story of 12 landmark figures to paint a very different picture of the age: one of bright ambition, bold self-belief and determined industriousness.
Whether through Peel’s commitment to building free trade, Palmerston’s deft diplomacy in international affairs, or Pugin’s uplifting architectural feats, the Victorians transformed the nation and established Britain as a preeminent global force.
Now, 200 years since the birth of Queen Victoria, it is essential that we remember the spirit, drive and values of the Victorians who forged modern Britain as we consider our future as a nation.

**** Warning, written by a tory **** ha ha ha …….
well - at least it wasn’t a flat-earther, or climate-change-denialist :-)

Not just any tory - but the MP from the 18th Century. An examination of the very dark side of Victorianism would also be essential, especially if he wants to use the era as a model. However, that might be conveniently beyond the scope of a two & a half hour book! It doesn’t even sound like he has a very large amount of good to say about the 12 titans, with such a dainty morsel of a tome.

Not, perhaps, his finest moment:

Britain could learn a lot from the industrious Victorians. Look at the state of it today. Mass immigration has led to a crime epidemic in London, with native Londoners now a minority in their own capital. The country even has trouble untangling itself from its EU overlord. Good riddance, globalist May.

Normally I would jump at a chance to listen to a book like this.
It’s bad enough it’s written by a right-wing fascist whose political party dream of taking us back to that era, but being read by him too is just going too far for me, I couldn’t stomach it.
Appreciate the upload, but I pass on this one.

Goodbye May; willkommen BoJo! Would the last person to leave, please switch off all the lights?
Jacob has defended the use of concentration camps by the British, and has said that any deaths were within the bounds of acceptability.
The British used concentration camps before AND after the Nazis.
The prosecution rests, m’lord.

itxlan - They disagree with him politically (Both his Brexit stance and his religious views on things like abortion) so it’s possible the review may be a LITTLE biased.
Thanks for the upload!

“No doubt every sanctimonious academic in the country has already decided that Rees-Mogg’s book has to be dreadful, so it would have been fun to disappoint them, but there is just no denying it: the book is terrible, so bad, so boring, so mind-bogglingly banal that if it had been written by anybody else it would never have been published.”
