My all time favorite series. Thank you for uploading them. Wish Patrick would realease the last book all three books where finished in 2007 and Rothfuss just seems to be dicking around and spends what 4 years to revise and proof read on a book before releasing it, not buying it. (there was a interview in 2007 where he said all books where done and he would release them in 1 year incriments btw)

This is the Nick Podehl narration (NOT Rupert Degas). I think Nick Podehl’s version is better anyway. Thanks for the upload!

The other comment is right, this is Nick Podehl, but I’m going have to disagree with them that his version is better than Rupert Degas. It’s much, much worse, and I highly recommend that you go stay away from this version.
Audio samples:
Nick Podehl - Prologue

Rupert Degas - Chapter 1

Right of the bat, Podehl’s voice is sort of jarring, because he sounds like some 20 year old kid reading the book. I’ll give him credit for attempting to do voices here and there, but for the most part, he’s incredibly boring to listen to and commands absolutely no authority in his voice. The most amazing part about Nick Podehl is that he somehow manages to make these books boring, which is incredible, given how fantastic they are. It’s really quite the feat!
I had to start Name of the Wind over twice while trying to listen to him because his narration is so terrible that I couldn’t help myself from spacing out while it was playing. The first time, I got to chapter twenty-something, realized I had no idea what the hell was going on, and quit. Started over, and within the first three or four chapters, I caught myself not paying attention again, and quit. Again. Nick Podehl literally gave me ADD.
Went back and got the Rupert Degas version, and it’s night and day. His voices are better, his pacing is better, he’s much more believable and creates a better atmosphere, etc. I finally was able to immerse myself in the books, and I must say, they are wonderful. I’ve only recently gotten into fantasy lately, ever since that whole Song of Ice and Fire thing everyone’s been doing got me into the genre. So in the past year or so I’ve finished/caught up on ASoIaF, Kingkiller Chronicles, The First Law, Mistborn, The Stormlight Archive, Gentlemen Bastards, Farseer, The Broken Empire, and The Prince of Nothing. GRRM was my favorite, but after that, I’m going to go ahead and say Rothfuss was the next best. This is really an amazing series he’s started here. His characters, his world building, his prose–all top notch. He’s a fantastic writer. I haven’t bothered learning anything about the guy, but I just know from the way he writes, he’s a very well educated and bright man, and I look forward to anything else the man does from here on out (especially the last damn book of Kingkiller Chronicles!!!)

Just want to add my 2 pennies;
I like Nick Podehl better.
Also because Kvothe is still quite young, if I remember correctly he’s somewhere in his mid to late 20’s…
But don’t take my word for it, use the audio samples Brandon linked and judge for yourself.
anyhoo, GREAT books, and thanks for the upload!

Count me in for degas. I wound up having to d/l his version from a different site though. Agreed that Podehl is kind of boring. he sounds like a voiceover for a cell phone comercial lol.
I dont think that his voice suits kvothe better. Yes podehl has the voice of a child and kvothe is in his mid to late 20’s and telling the tale from his childhood on up, but lets not forget that kvothe has a very deep and low voice. They make a point of calling out his very strong baritone quite often, even intdroducing him with the thunder as one of his nicknames. degas pulls that off better. i do have a big problem with degas sometimes when i cant make out his accent for some things and have no idea what he just said. but luckily i have the ebooks too so i just cross check and its not a big deal.
Each to his own though. agreed that you shoul check those samples and decide for yourself. Either way you’re getting a great book! This is one of the best fantasy novels of all time.
Also even though this version aint for me, thanks for uploading this though! i appreciate that you packaged both books togetherlike this. :)

This is NOT the Rupert Degas version. I have listened to both performances of the The Name of the Wind. Degas, a man of many, many voices captures the scale and grandeur of the story. His native metre (i.e. characteristic as opposed to nationality) habituates Rothfuss’ language so comfortably a listener can be forgiven for believing that the author wrote with the actor’s voice in his head. Podehl’s voice is crystal clear and pure. But writing such as this, prose which undulates like poetry and Kvothe himself are best drawn with a delivery that recalls grit, and musk and wry deprecating humour - Degas

Nick Podehl version is fantastic. I think whatever version you listen to first will hook you. But they couldn’t be more different.
December 2nd, 2014
Seeing the discussion in the comment I feel I should add another opinion. And my opinion is for Degas. 100%! I actually tried listening to Podhel to see the difference. I did. Degas is much much better.
December 9th, 2014
lol i love that all the comments in here are about the narrator instead of the books themselves.
ive listened to both and i like degas more. basically what lunalovegood wrote. can’t put it much better than that. if you want some sweet little angel whispering in your ear than listen to podehl but if you’re a gritty motherfucker like me, i wanna hear that bitter asshole rupert degas reading my bedtime stories. its an entirely different experience listening to each narrator. nick podehl reads it like a light hearted fairy tale. rupert degas reads it like a dark fantasy, which i feel is more appropriate given kvothe’s position and the world he lives in.
anyway enough about the voices of the readers and more about these books. goddamn thats some good shit. what are you waiting for?!!? i dont care who reads it to you!!! get these books!!!

+1 for Rupert Degas - He is amazing!
Definitely the best.
December 24th, 2014
Throwing my hat in the ring for Degas. I tried this version and it just isn’t for me. Made it a few chapters in and decided to make the switch before I got too far in and am much happier for it.
With my vote, the count is at:
7 votes Rupert Degas
3 votes Nick Podehl
Go listen to those soundcloud samples posted above and see why.

I would LOVE a characterized version of this Degas feller. When I first got the audiobook for KKC it was for the deaf folk, and was either this guy…or a 3rd one… the second book was Nick and I really dug his style…I don’t find it boring nor do I find his character voices lacking…I AM under the impression that Nick has been taught the proper way to pronounce names and things…I was miffed by the odd way certain names were said by Degas.
Honestly…if I can manage it… I would love to combine the two…because I think they both compliment each other.
But hell, put in a vote for Nick on my behalf, I really do enjoy his reading…and since may ‘11 i’ve listened to his version over ten times… I’m a fan.

everyone says that degas is better and i agree but i cant find a audiobook of degas reading the second book does anyone else know

Thanks crazy 88. I type “name of the wind” from time to time to see if there is an update and if the Degas version is available. Your link works wonder and is very fast.
If I like the book I might give the Nick Poedel a go too after. It’s like theater, interpretation of a play or a book can give different strengths or highlight something unseen before.
Thanks to all for you comments. Very informative.
March 16th, 2015
Neither would have been my choice, but this series and his characters stand for themselves, regardless of the narrator and if the author oft his series stands for them I have no problem listening to both versions, it helps during the wait:-)
March 17th, 2015
Hmm. Not going to touch the debate on the narrators. Too much talk about that, and not the actual books themselves. :)
The Name of the Wind is one of my favorite Fantasy novels written in the past decade. It’s whimsical and wonderfully written. Rothfuss crafts fantastic and deep world that you can get lost in, despite the story only following a single character. The main character does tend to walk the line of a Mary Sue, or I guess Gary Stu is the appropriate term here, but there’s sort of a balance there, since bad things do tend to happen to him on the regular and that almost makes up for him being basically perfect in most regards. Nevertheless, it’s a great opening book, and does a fantastic job of setting the stage for the rest of the trilogy.
Unfortunately I can’t say the same thing for The Wise Man’s Fear. It’s basically fan-fiction level story telling. It’s probably fine if you’re a YA reader, but I was expecting better than this. It does nothing to improve on it’s predecessor, and in fact, goes in the complete opposite direction. It’s all the bad from The Name of the Wind, but concentrated and turned up to 11. Some background info: This whole entire trilogy is based on a tale that Rothfuss cooked up when he was in college years and years ago. It’s fantasy world he dreamed up at a very young age, and it becomes more and more obvious as you go along from Name of the Wind, through Wise Man’s Fear, that Rothfuss wrote his ideal self in as the main character. It’s especially obvious when you realize how big of a geek Rothfuss is (not that being a geek is a bad thing, mind you). But again, fan fiction, Gary Stu, etc. On top of that, without getting into spoilers, it’s basically an 800 page filler novel. This is the second book of a trilogy. It’s where things are supposed to get escalated for the closing book. Instead, it leaves you with no immediate plot threads to resolve or address in the final book. On top of all of that. It’s just sort of boring. Everything wonderful about the first book is simply not there in this one. It’s really just a big let down.
Regardless, I still intend to see this through when the final novel comes out. There is still hope that Rothfuss can close this thing out positively, given the promise he showed in The Name of the Wind. Either way, the story is still worth a read (or listen in this case). There is a lot of bad out there in the fantasy genre these days, and even with my hangups about the second novel, it is still better than a lot of fantasy that is being written these days.
March 17th, 2015
Second book isn’t near as good as the first one but its not too bad. Its enough to knock it below lots of other newer fantasy series though. GRRM’s ice and fire is number one. abercrombie’s first law is number two. Grossman’s magicians is number three. erikson’s malazan is four. Sanderson’s stormlight archives is five. then maybe rothfuss and kingkiller chronicles. i might swap it out with scott lynch gentleman bastards. they’re in the same boat. first book (name of the wind and lies of locke lamora) are excellent, but the following books are let downs. honorable mention goes to broken empire.
April 1st, 2015
Podehl is terrible for this book. Plus, anyone who pronounces twining as twinning and viscount as viss-count needs to have a word with themselves before narrating an audio book. I will continue to search for the Rupert Degas version.
April 3rd, 2015
I’ll sort this out for everyone. Rupert Degas is the superior experience. He sets the mood better for the series. Nick Podel flat out sucks.
Patrick Rothfuss is a good writer, with excellent prose. But he ruined his story. The second book is terrible. I just… I can’t fathom how anyone could find it enjoyable. First half of the book is a rehash of the Name of the Wind, and the second half is a series of unrelated events that just has Kvothe being an accidental expert at everything he does. And the sex goddess stuff is just… too much. Just too far. Too much Mary Sue. Literally embarrassing.
If may have forgiven it if the plot advanced at all in the book. AT ALL. But like someone above said, it’s just a giant load of filler that doesn’t leave you anything for the last novel. No wonder it’s taken Patrick Rothfuss years on this third book, with no release date in site.
April 16th, 2015
nice to see this series is causing quite a stir here. much like in real life the people i know cant decide if its good or not. in my experience it’s the younger crowd who likes these books alot. teens and such. when you start asking older people who are more well read they are the ones who dislike and have problems with the books. theyll be able to point out the weaknesses and flaws of the books because they have more experience to judge them by. teens who have only read hunger games and twilight cant see the difference.
July 16th, 2015
Thanks for the link crazy 88. Much appreciated.
I also vote for Rupert Degas. Nick Poedhl sounds like a 20 year old College student. Perhaps appropriate for the voice of Kvoethe, but he certainly does not create the rapturous vision of a story that Degas is able to conjure. Rather Poedhl makes me think of one of my childhood babysitters doing a fine job telling bedtime stories to children, but his youthful voice just doesn’t bring the gravity and weight to a story of adventure and loss that is inherent to the best fantasy.
So what’s the count? 10 for Degas and 3 for Poedhl so far?
August 18th, 2015
Absolutely loved Degas storytelling. Never been so drawn into an audiobook before, than i was with Degas telling. Listening to the Poedhl version i find myself missing Ruperts Kvoth.

This is the Prologue, Rupert is making himself sound older because Kvothe is older.

Rupert makes Kvothe sound like a 13 year old when appropriate.

Interesting. You know, I’ve always said I preferred Podel’s reading. My first real experience with audiobooks was Degas’s version of the first book. I can’t exactly recall why, but his voice bugged me. Then later, on my second reading, I listened to Podel’s, and I recall enjoying it. Every time I went back for another listen-through, I chose that one. But now that I’ve got a few more audiobooks under my belt, I’d have to agree with what seems to be the majority of you. Degas has a wider, more versatile range. His voice really accentuate’s the depth and dimensions of Pat’s characters. To be fair, Podel is quite good in his own right, but I agree that Degas lends the gravitas and import to the scenes that call for it. I would say, however, that Podel’s voice is more appropriate for the other parts of the books. There are some parts of both books that are genuinely knee-slapingly hilarious. Those parts of the book are just as important to me as the plot-essential intrigue bits. In my opinion, Podel’s voice is more suited for those parts. Also, there are moments in the books that are emotionally touching. I feel Podel excels at teasing out the emotional subtlety of those scenes, though Degas is also exceptional in this regard.
In short, they both have their strengths and weaknesses. If audiobooks were like many other things in life, I’d stay get them together and have them collaborate on a third version, each drawing on their personal strengths. Unfortunately, for the most part, audibooks don’t work that way. Too many cooks in the kitchen and all that. In the mean time, I very much enjoy both versions and have listened to them both at least three times each.
April 14th, 2016
I started to listen to Podehl having listened to Degas previously and was struck by how wrong it was.
Almost heretical. It hurt my ears. Really
But you can hear it too when Rothfuss himself reads Slow Regard and then you listen to the Rothfuss story in the Rogues collection(Martin/Duzois) which Degas reads.
Degas is genuine, the others seem wrong to my ears.

Same copy as the others on here, just a lower bit rate, still missing part of Chapter 87, just cuts off suddenly

Crazy 88 i love you
March 24th, 2017
I need to praise Nick’s work, he does an espetacular Voice acting here and he manages to bring life to each sentence, loved it
March 25th, 2017
I don’t know why I bothered reading the comments in here, but I did. I can’t just let this one slip by, but did someone in here (”dmac”) really just place The Magicians alongside stuff like ASOIAF and Malazan? Yikes. I just threw up a little bit. Hell, it doesn’t belong with any of those other series listed either. Stormlight, First Law, Kingkiller… all soooo much better than knockoff emo Harry Potter meets Chronicles of Narnia.
July 1st, 2017
I tried listening to Degas. I couldn’t get twenty seconds in, his voice just feels wrong. Granted, if I heard his first, I might be of the other opinion, but I did not.
September 21st, 2017
Can’t find the Degas version anywhere guys. Can anyone help?
July 20th, 2018
I mean neither of them are James Marsters, who’s narration of the Dresden Files is the single most greatest thing ever. Between the two though, I do prefer Podehl over Degas.
August 23rd, 2018
Here’s the hash for the Rupert Degas reading of this same torrent.
BBBF74D082E0CD9428A01D9628F8F95101372EB9
He’s actually excellent. I like Marsters and I love Will Patton but Degas is a much better choice than either for this book. He’s damned near perfect. Makes all the difference to listening. Effortless, instead of having to concentrate on the story to keep details straight.
(I have both versions. Not sure how anyone who’d heard Degas could prefer Podehl. He’s not what I would call a bad reader but 100% wrong for the material. Well worth the effort to obtain both and choose for yourself).
