Loneliness has become the defining condition of the 21st century. It is damaging our health, our wealth, and our happiness and even threatening our democracy. Never has it been more pervasive or more widespread, but never has there been more that we can do about it.
Even before a global pandemic introduced us to terms like “social distancing”, the fabric of community was unraveling and our personal relationships were under threat. And technology isn’t the sole culprit. Equally to blame are the dismantling of civic institutions, the radical reorganization of the workplace, the mass migration to cities, and decades of neoliberal policies that have placed self-interest above the collective good.
This is not merely a mental health crisis. Loneliness increases our risk of heart disease, cancer, and dementia. Statistically, it’s as bad for our health as smoking fifteen cigarettes a day. It’s also an economic crisis, costing us billions annually. And it’s a political crisis, as feelings of marginalization fuel divisiveness and extremism around the world. But it’s also a crisis we have the power to solve.
Combining a decade of research with firsthand reporting, Noreena Hertz takes us from a “how to read a face” class at an Ivy League university to isolated remote workers in London during lockdown, from “renting a friend” in Manhattan to nursing home residents knitting bonnets for their robot caregivers in Japan.
Offering bold solutions ranging from compassionate AI to innovative models for urban living to new ways of reinvigorating our neighborhoods and reconciling our differences, The Lonely Century offers a hopeful and empowering vision for how to heal our fractured communities and restore connection in our lives.

Is loneliness a big issue in Asia where the majority of humans live? “It’s all about me”, say the westerners.
We don’t need to hear from you Asians before we announce the latest universal truth based on our pseudo scientific pop psychology & it’s decade long & still going replication crisis.
I’d love to see the “It’s all about me” generation try to enforce their pronouns upon the billions of Asian people. First they would need to explain it to them. That would be fun to watch too.
The lion’s share of blame for the west’s Loneliness crisis comes from the neo liberal mentality ushered in by their puppets Reagan & Thatcher - 1980’s.
The masses believed the hype. Monetize & privatize everything - what could go wrong? They bought in to globalization just as willingly. Now the Walmarts that killed mom & pop locals are abandoning ship in areas where there’s no blood left to suck.

@apnea, well said apnea, the blame is placed everywhere except where it lies; the socialist marxist policies of third wave feminism, neoliberalism and their woke ideologues, and the tech giants that profit from weaponizing attention, female vanity and male simpery. What a gift it is to delete the troves of left-leaning psuedo-babble from your life, as I highly doubt this female author will be able to go beyond her fem-centric-first bias to uncover the harsh truths.

most of asia is turning into the west, japan is a great example and is just ahead of the curve, same with S korea both have the same problems, China and india in 30 years will face the same and so will every modernizing asian country in the next 40 years. Once women are economically independent, they no longer want families, no families means no communities means lonely atomized single people in little boxes. Men also didnt know that women hate the majority of us and look down on us, but now we know. Civs with these issues dont last long, just hope men dont forget who did this but they always do just like before.

Wow. How did loneliness become an incel conspricy?
It’s not just sad white guys in the U.S. who are lonely (and blame liberals for all their problems). It’s global phenomenon, including Asia.
Talk about getting triggered. You guys are losing it.

Every part of a relationship has been beta tested and monetizable in japan/S korea since the mid 70’s.
1) Host clubs - women pay to talk to attractive men & vice versa
2) love hotels
3) cuddle for money / hugs for money
4) rent a friend
5) rent a GF
6)Idols & Hooter type diners/cafe’s
7) Hikkomori phenomenon … the list goes on and on
The west is actually over 2 decades behind but with a spin, it will use technology to plug the gap. This means that loneliness will only increase as it becomes monetized and all these are poor substitutes that cant fulfill the core issue.
