The Wonderful Flight to the Mushroom Planet - Eleanor Cameron

Cameron wrote this classic science fiction book for her children while living in Pacific Grove, California in the 1950s. Literati may know the area better as “Cannery Row” from the Steinbeck novel. Never available in audio format, it seemed a shame that kids (and grownups) with visual disabilities were denied access to the book. Or maybe folks would just like someone to read them a story they remembered– the rationale is irrelevant… So I fired up a DAT deck after hours at a radio station a few years ago, and recorded the novel, unabridged, using character voices to give it a little style and flash… Anyway, here, for the first time is a little something I hope you enjoy. Keep on truckin’ –slightlyremovedDoconthePlaya
Postscript: The “Mushroom Planet” books ended up as a series of 5 novels and one pamphlet. As it progressed, Cameron shifted the series more and more into Celtic mythology. Someone else has all the novels uploaded as ebooks, alas, without the original illustrations. I plan to scan and upload the missing pamphlet when I can get around to it . Anyway if this reading sparks your interest, there’s more out there. Don’t bother trying to find the actual books– they’re incredibly expensive in the antiquarian market, and whatever you do, don’t buy the Scholastic Press reprints– all the illustrations have been cut. Eleanor Cameron was a very cool woman. She wrote two of the best nonfiction works on the craft of writing children’s books ever done, in addition to her fiction.

I checked these books out from the library as a child in the late 1990s. Had no idea I was handling valuable antiques. I just thought they were great stories, giving the L. Frank Baum Oz fantasy formula a science fiction twist. And yes, those illustrations were great. What is the copyright status of these? Why aren’t they more widely available?
