In the grotesque bell-ringer Quasimodo, Victor Hugo created one of the most vivid characters in classic fiction. Quasimodo’s doomed love for the beautiful gypsy girl Esmeralda is an example of the traditional love theme of beauty and the beast. Yet, set against the massive background of Notre Dame de Paris and interwoven with the sacred and secular life of medieval France, it takes on a larger perspective. The characters come to life: the poet, Gringoire; the tormented priest, Claude Frollo; the fun-loving captain, Phoebus; and, above all, Quasimodo and Esmeralda themselves. It is a tale peppered with humor but fueled by the anguish that unfolds beneath the bells of the great cathedral of Paris.

How topical

What have the hunchbacks done now? ;)

Good timing, Euripides. Even Hitler had not managed to destroy this magnificent cathedral, with the rest of Paris, as he fully intended. Not to mention all of the other wars and scourges over the last 800 years.

Did he …? Surely not? He did not burn inside, the wretched soul?

A bit cynical, isn’t it… uploading this on the day of its destruction…

Thanks so much euripides!

Who is more cynical? He who shares the file, or he who questions the motive?

How is it cynical to celebrate and commemorate a magnificent cathedral with a classic book? That was Victor Hugo’s purpose as well.

Appreciate you sharing this, Euri!

@plopsaklant: At the risk of sounding pernickety, the word you’re looking for is insensitive, not cynical. You assuming the worst of my intentions without knowing me as a person are the cynical one here.
Anyway, as caesar963 says, what’s wrong with uploading the work of an author who wrote books to celebrate the cathedral?

It is not cynical, it is timely and valuable. Everyone should enjoy this lovely rendition now, in memory of the beautiful building that hate-fueled lefties like plop!
I have the George Guidall narration on Audible, so I thank you for bringing this lovely version to the ears of all on this site.

If anything, Euri has helped to raise awareness of what happened to ND this week.

I probably was a bit emotional. My sincere excuses, Euripides. You’ve meant well, of course…

@plopsaklant: It’s all right. No harm done. :)

Victor Hugo initially intended his novel to be an effort to conserve history and preserve the Cathedral at Notre Dame, so it’s all the more wonderful that this novel was shared recently.

Euripides - Thanks for the great upload, I agree with C963, perfect timing!
caesar963 - You’re the man! As I’ve amassed my collection and plowed through them relentlessly, I always enjoyed finding your input and bantor in the comments section. I can only imagine how many of these books you have in your collection, seems like you’re always beating me to the DL. Thanks for lighting the path for me my friend, I do believe we enjoy the same genres and authors to the ‘T’. Cheers!
