NOTE: Mediocre reviews aside, you may want to skip this one if you’re a stickler for good continuity. The protagonist of this novel is the same as in “Fist of God” (1994); unfortunately, the corresponding backstory here is nothing less than atrocious, managing to disagree with the previously established timeline at every turn even though it lifts long passages verbatim from the earlier novel. As there’s no obvious reason for most of the changes, it’s anyone’s guess whether the author is doing this deliberately or just can’t be bothered to make more of an effort. Either way, if you do care about that sort of thing, the effect is extremely distracting and off-putting, especially when reading the two books in sufficiently close succession to pick up on each instance.
