Very few people know that WWI was the first war over oil, which was on the verge to replace coal in the various navy fleets. With its alliance with the Ottoman Empire and the building of the the Berlin-Baghdad Railway, Germany was forging a land bridge with the oil fields in Mesopotamia. This posed a serious threat to the British hegemony. A prime example of a Thucydides trap.
However, a century long misdirection by the victors on the war’s western front and you get the impression they were fighting over Belgian waffles.
