Most of Jim Corbett’s books contain collections of stories that recount adventures tracking and shooting man-eaters in the Indian Himalaya. This volume, however, consists of a single story, often considered the most exciting of all Corbett’s jungle tales. He gives a carefully-detailed account of a notorious leopard that terrorized life in the hills of the colonial United Provinces. This story represents Corbett’s most sustained and unique effort.

A nice tie-in to the recent release of Mary Roach’s book “Fuzz” that mentions Jim… not too kindly.

nylon - Did she stalk man-eating tigers or leopards deep in to the jungle on foot, alone on a treacherous terrain ? (often for days without food…?)
Did she put her life on the line , countless times, to save other lives?
Had she done any selfless humanitarian work like Jim without any regard to race or colour, often spending one’s entire savings?

It’s a fantastic book. Jim Corbett’s writing style is lucid, frank and good humoured. It’s a shame that the narrator, reading a book set in India, has not made any effort to learn how to pronounce the place names and Indian words and expressions even reasonably well. And as you may expect in a situation where men are hunting leopards and leopards are hunting men, one English word that comes up frequently is “escape”. The author pronounces this, every time, as “exscape”. Where do they get these people? Anyway a great book, and the narration is otherwise competent.
