“Star Wars is the ultimate mythological tale of our age, a hero’s journey that is a tribute to the beauty of human freedom as well as an exploration of its dark complexities. In this gem of a book, the brilliant Cass Sunstein uses the series to explore profound questions about being a parent, a child, and a human. It will change the way you think about your own journey, and it might even make you pick up the phone and call your dad.” (Walter Isaacson)
A deeply original celebration of George Lucas’ masterpiece as it relates to history, presidential politics, law, economics, fatherhood, and culture by a Harvard legal scholar and former White House advisor.
There’s Santa Claus, Shakespeare, Mickey Mouse, and the Bible, and then there’s Star Wars. Nothing quite compares to sitting down with a young child and hearing the sound of John Williams’ score as those beloved golden letters fill the screen. In this fun, erudite, and often moving book, Cass R. Sunstein explores the lessons of Star Wars as they relate to childhood, fathers, the Dark Side, rebellion, and redemption. As it turns out, Star Wars also has a lot to teach us about constitutional law, economics, and political uprisings.
In rich detail, Sunstein tells the story of the films’ wildly unanticipated success and what it has to say about why some things succeed while others fail. Ultimately, Sunstein argues, Star Wars is about the freedom of choice and our never-ending ability to make the right decision when the chips are down. Written with buoyant prose and considerable heart, The World According to Star Wars shines new light on the most beloved story of our time.

This sounds interesting. Thank you, @Haru55

Hmm. I always thought the subtext of Star Wars was we should all bow down to our hereditary masters: the jedi, the princesses, all have power because they were born to it, it was in their blood. There is no democracy in the Star Wars galaxy. You’re a hero, a villain or cannon fodder.
It’s a comic book story, a lot of fun but don’t draw any lessons from it.

@Gweilo I deeply disagree with what you’re saying. Star Wars is as profound of a story as anything taught in school. (This coming from an English teacher) While you can get just simple entertainment out of it if you want, you would be missing important connections to our world and the human condition. It goes beyond what mindless action movies do.

@jsmy: I don’t know about the “human condition”. It’s a “Hero’s journey”, not relevant to those of us who aren’t heroes, who don’t have blue aristocratic blood and/or midichlorians.
The political viewpoint it espouses is actually abhorrent, if you look past the charisma of the actors.

Written by a leftist. You don’t need to listen to 5 minutes to know what he’s going to say.

@rivatej428: Really, a “leftist”? Interesting analysis you bring to bear..
My guess: Trump is Jabba the Hutt? Putin is Palpatine.
Unfortunately, the real world has few heroes.

@Gweilo Han, Lando, Finn, Chewy, R2, Wedge, on and on…None of them were loaded with midichlorians or aristocratic. And Padme was a queen due to an election, you know, a democracy.

@freeloader75: Maybe the later episodes retconned the backstory, looked it up and somehow they elect queens? Sure. And Greedo shot first.

Pop sociology books can often use these subjects as an intriguing departure point to discuss issues with a little bit of substance.
SW was like a Bible for me as a kid, but there are a lot of mixed messages in there.
Apart from the abundant “normal” class issues, Tatooine (and other regions) had a slave population, with chips implanted into their bodies that would explode if the slave attempted to escape.
And weren’t Wookies also used as slaves, due to their great strength?
Moreover, there were the blameless independent contractors working on the construction of the Death Star…power to the people, right on.

…and the proles who were driven - from economic necessity - to become Stormtroopers were always provided with appallingly ineffective armour. Did their lives mean nothing?!
