Even now, after more than fifteen years, it is hard to see the invasion of Iraq through the cool, considered gaze of history. For too many people, the damage is still too palpable, and still unfolding. Most of the major players in that decision are still with us, and few are not haunted by it, in one way or another. Perhaps that combination, the passage of the years and the still unresolved trauma, explains why so many protagonists opened up so fully for the first time to Robert Draper.
Draper’s prodigious reporting has yielded scores of important new revelations, from the important to the merely absurd. As a whole. the book paints a vivid and indelible picture of a decision-making process that was fatally compromised, by a combination of post-9/11 fear and paranoia, rank naïveté, craven group think, and a set of actors with idées fixes who gamed the process relentlessly. Everything was believed; nothing was true. The intelligence failure was comprehensive. Draper’s fair-mindedness and deep understanding of the principal actors suffuse his account, as does a storytelling genius that is close to sorcery. No one is cheap-shotted here, which makes the ultimate conclusion all the more damning. In the spirit of Barbara Tuchman’s The Guns of August and Marc Bloch’s Strange Defeat, To Start a War will stand as the definitive account of a collective process that arrived at evidence that would be prove to be, not just dubious but entirely false, driven by imagination rather than a quest for truth–evidence to drive a verdict that led to hundreds of thousands of deaths and a flood tide of chaos in the Middle East that shows no signs of ebbing.

Okay, as I conservative, I will (in good faith) try to build some middle ground. George H W Bush was a deepstate asshole.

If it told the truth it wouldn’t get published.

As a conservative it pains me to have to admit that water is wet.

“The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results”.

@alnilam considering every single time both you and lisiva5995 comment on something it’s to take a snide jab at liberals, ought we to assume that you’re both insane?

Nope, not true — just commenting on this and that. Liberals just happen to hang around, and for some peculiar reason they rarely miss the opportunity to take it personally.

I just find it funny that leftists are still talking about Iraq (because America won, which they can’t stand)… when Iraq was authorized by the US Congress and UN and was justified under catholic “just war” doctrine… yet they don’t bat an eye at the left’s wholly illegal wars in Libya, Syria and Yemen, each of which were illegal, unjustified and immoral BY THEIR OWN STATED STANDARDS… or the fact that Hillary Clinton declared her intent to start WW3 in Syria in order to cover up her national security crimes… I mean, the left used to have SOME standards.

Unlike Clinton (the rapist) or Obummer (the stodge, Bush had Congress vote on attacking our enemies. Pelosi (the hag), Schumer (the skunk) and many others saw the same intelligence and information before voting to attack. I wouldn’t wipe my dog’s ass with this rag. Bush was a below average President. Clinton and Obummer deserve jail time.

@playmaker88
Please explain to me how America (and the UK, I can’t absolve my own country’s involvement) “won” in Iraq.
Many thanks.
