Publisher’s Summary
An expert on American authoritarianism offers a searing rebuke of the exceptional narrative that dominates our understanding of US history. In 12 lessons, Matthew C. MacWilliams’ On Fascism exposes the divisive rhetoric, strongman tactics, violent othering, and authoritarian attitudes that course through American history and compete with our egalitarian, democratic aspirations. Trumpism isn’t new but rooted in our refusal to come to terms with this historical reality.
The United States of Lyncherdom, as Mark Twain labeled America. Lincoln versus Douglas. The Chinese Exclusion Act. The Trail of Tears. The internment of Japanese Americans. The Palmer Raids. McCarthyism. The Surveillance State. At turning points throughout history, as we aspired toward great things, we also witnessed the authoritarian impulse drive policy and win public support. Only by confronting and reconciling this past can America move forward into a future rooted in the motto of our Republic since 1782: e pluribus unum (out of many, one).
But this audiobook isn’t simply an indictment. It is also a celebration of our spirit, perseverance, and commitment to the values at the heart of the American project. Along the way, we learn about many American heroes - like Ida B. Wells, who dedicated her life to documenting the horrors of lynching throughout the nation, or the young Jewish American who took a beating for protesting a Nazi rally in New York City in 1939. Men and women who embodied the soaring, revolutionary proclamations set forth in the Declaration of Independence and the Preamble to the Constitution.
On Fascism is both an honest reckoning and a call for reconciliation. Denial and division will not save the Republic, but coming to terms with our history might.

It’s like an echo… Waah waah, Trump, Waah waah, Nazis, waah waah, right wing… Who reads these one sided opinion pieces…?

@BobdeNassty
So you support all those things?

Lol. It’s that broken record again.
The cash grab on this kind of race baiting garbage must be really dropping off…
I mean, there’s only one local clown cheering this trash on for a change and they aren’t even paying for it.

Another Trump whine fest by sniveling, apologetic numb nuts, who still think that Joe Bidet is mentally stable and competent.
MacWilliams writes for the usual anti-American, hate Capitalism crowd. I’m sure they’ll commit self-abuse to this crap as well.
Save your brain, money and time.

Look at the lockdowns, travel restrictions, mask mandates and talk about forcing vaccinations on people. That is true authoritarianism.

@zombie13: What a crybaby you are, acting like common sense public health measures are true authoritarianism. Get a f@cking grip.
Here let me show you what your life would be like if you were in an authoritarian state:
China has a new rule for the country’s hundreds of millions of young gamers: No online video games during the school week, and one hour a day on Fridays, weekends and public holidays.
The government announcement said all online video games will be required to connect to an “anti-addiction” system operated by the National Press and Publication Administration. The regulation, which takes effect on Wednesday, will require all users to register using their real names and government-issued identification documents.

Lol.So, the new logic is…
It’s not authoritarian when I agree with the authoritarianism, it’s “common sense?
Factually, Covid-19 is less dangerous than the flu to all sections of the public except those over 70.
None of this has been “common sense”.
It has been the greatest wealth transfer in history from the poor to the very rich.
And yet, the left has seen it as a badge of honor to cheer this tripe on.
Because the poor don’t matter, when those on the left are scared and can’t calculate risk properly.

I’m not disputing this statement. I can’t find the science this claim is making. Please share yours.

COVID-19 is far more harmful and deadly than the seasonal flu, new studies confirm.
Researchers analyzed U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs data on more than 3,600 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 between Feb. 1 and June 17 of this year, and more than 12,600 hospitalized with the flu between Jan. 1, 2017 and Dec. 31, 2019. The average age of patients in both groups was 69.
The death rate among COVID-19 patients was 18.5%, while it was 5.3% for those with the flu. Those with COVID were nearly five times more likely to die than flu patients, according to the study published online Dec. 15 in the BMJ.
COVID-19 patients with the highest risk of death included those aged 75 and older who also had chronic kidney disease or dementia, and Blacks who were obese, or who had diabetes or kidney disease.
You can check out many publications huge studys ect. Denying reality is a true sign of Stupidity. Deny that the earth is round deny that we landed on the moon Deny COVID-19 is mire deadly than the Flu all you want it still does not make it true.
Still thank you for the upload ideas any ideas need to be heard.

Dr. John Ioannidis, Professor of Medicine, Stanford University. These figures have been accepted by the WHO too. Given Dr. Ioannidis is one of the world’s leading experts in data-driven disease management, this ought to be no surprise.
Recent pre-pub.
This makes Covid much less deadly than the flu for the under 70s.
No more clown school stuff… literally not as bad as the flu.
Terrible for the over 70s.
Nothing for the rest of us.
Cowardice-driven public policy that destroyed the lives of the working and lower-middle classes, and the left thinks it was “common sense”?
Disgusting.

I think we can all recognize Trump’s narcissistic personality, but how in the world is he getting thrown in with the Trail of tears? Exactly what did he decree that was authoritarian or tyrannical? What country did he invade? What people group did he oppress and persecute?

No sane, well-adjusted people even hear it anymore.
