Publisher’s Summary
In The Age of Revolution, renowned British Marxist historian Eric Hobsbawm focuses on the historical period from the end of the 18th century to the middle of the 19th. He concludes that the “dual revolutions” of the time - the French Revolution and the British Industrial Revolution - changed the way the whole world thought about politics and power, and fundamentally shaped the modern era.
This is the first in Hobsbawm’s acclaimed trilogy of books on the “long” 19th century - from 1789 to 1914. In The Age of Revolution he explains how the dual revolutions created conditions in which capitalism and liberalism could rise and dominate. But while values such as liberty, free trade, and meritocracy led to the formation of the middle class, this leap forward largely excluded the urban, laboring poor, resulting in the emergence of socialism and the working class.
Although now over 50 years old, the text remains a superb introduction to modern history and has been read by millions worldwide.
You can find out more about how Hobsbawm’s ideas have been challenged and applied - and how his work has impacted on thinkers in other academic disciplines - by exploring further in the Macat Library.

@mr.Potatomuncher963 - He wrote he was sorry.

Is this about the Eurovision again? Lordi, will it never Finnish? Aim higher!
August 14th, 2021
@caesar - You’re right. I’m a bitter old man and Johnny “Is there some kind of limit?” Logan is a God.
August 14th, 2021
I knew u had a thing for Johnny. Be careful Sigrid doesn’t catch u in flagrante Logan.
August 15th, 2021
@caesar - I think you’re used up your pun quota with words Finnish and Lordi. I’m still due a few potato- and mold jokes.
August 16th, 2021
Now you’re introducing a quota? When will it Finnish, Bloodaxe?! When you start making jokes, I’ll let u know, u know.
August 16th, 2021
Well, a pun isn’t necessarily a joke, and in your case it definitely isn’t. Though I presume Irish folks are bursting on their seams.
August 16th, 2021
- but, top of the morning to you (an Irish joke)!
August 16th, 2021
Finnish sense of humour - now that’s a joke.
It’s rightly said that a Finnish joke is no laughing matter.
August 16th, 2021
A Finnish person walks out of a bar (that’s the joke, folks).
August 16th, 2021
Well, it is at the very least false. We prefer carried out unconscious. If I remember recent history, another joke goes: An Irish person walks out of a bar. And then it explodes. I must admit it’s not funny as such. Maybe I’m missing some nuances…
August 16th, 2021
History, hmmm… A Finn & a Nazi walk into a Bar(barossa) - the rest is history. Lots of explosions, unfortunately. Who needs nuance when they’ve got nasty Nazis in their Lap(land)?
August 16th, 2021
Well, at least Finns at those times had better reasons to our mishaps than hating another sect of same religion. We made a deal with the devil, but we’re not sanctimonious about it. Sh*t happens in war.
August 16th, 2021
In the end I think the joke’s on both of us. Stupid history.
August 16th, 2021
That’s a misconception about Northern Ireland. That conflict was purely tribal. The opposing terrorists were not remotely conflicted over transubstantiation versus consubstantiation.
Have to say, I don’t see “better reasons” for what the Finns did. P’haps, at the very least, one could say it was also tribal. However, there is no moral equivalence whatsoever between private, illegal terror organisations, and an entire state allying itself - for whatever reasons - with the architects of the Final Solution. That would be beyond a joke.
August 16th, 2021
No joke, I admit. World was somewhat more ignorant those “olden” days, and still someone like Trump can get elected now, and there’s a whole bunch of dictators and mass murderers doing well with us having internet and f*ck all. Nice judging. You really think the Irish would have fared better in the circumstances?
August 16th, 2021
I distinctly remember writing along the lines that I don’t take blame or credit what the previous generations of Finns did or failed to do. Most of the times one gets to decide only what do with the situation right before him, if even that.
August 16th, 2021
And I repeat: Sh*t happens in war.
August 16th, 2021
You brought up the situation of terrorism in Northern Ireland. First with the judging then. Once you invoke history, it’s all on the table. At the time, Irish people were charitable enough to aid their ancient oppressor, to join their armies again, in another of their endless wars. That was against the Nazis.
Nobody was reasonably ignorant of who they were. They opened concentration camps immediately; the Nuremberg Laws, annexations & Kristallnacht followed - all before the war. Too many have not confronted their appalling history; incl the Austrians, British & Japanese.
August 16th, 2021
The Irish terrorism didn’t stay in Northern Ireland as you well know.
And if Finns were in bed with Nazis for selfish reasons, so what? Rest of the west didn’t offer help, but went in cahoots with Sovjet Russia instead. Do you really think that it’s so simple? Nazis(and their allies) bad, and the rest were the good guys? You poor baby…
August 16th, 2021
What do know honestly about the politics of Northern Ireland? The terrorists from there did attack outwards - including bombs & mass killings here in Dublin & other counties (with aid from the British military & secret service). Irish people from the Republic, including police & politicians, have been murdered & tortured by such terrorists. Did you know any of that? Because you brought it all up, remember? So you’re clearly the expert.
In the North there was so-called Republican, Unionist & state terror vying together. Do you really think that was so simple? Did the rest of the West give a phuck? No, they recognised only the biggest state bully.
But no, people should ally with the Nazis for “better reasons” - FFS. And yes, I think all such toxic ideologues are definitively bad. All they do tends towards evil. It’s time everyone learned that fact.

This from wikipedia:
Finland and World War II overall:
During World War II, Finland was anomalous: It was the only European country bordering the Soviet Union in 1939 which was still unoccupied by 1945. It was a country which sided with Germany, but in which native Jews and almost all refugees were safe from persecution.[39] It was the only country that fought alongside Nazi Germany which maintained democracy throughout the war. It was in fact the only democracy in mainland Europe that remained so despite being an involved party in the war.
August 16th, 2021
As you so imperiously observed “The Irish terrorism didn’t stay in Northern Ireland as you well know.”
Just so. And “native Jews and almost all refugees were safe from persecution?” The persecution of Jews & refugees - and everyone else - equally did not stay in one country.
But that’s the type of thing Pontius Pilate would be only too happy to wash his hands of. Well, as long as it’s not happening here.

And a poem:
“Forward, the Light Brigade!”
Was there a man dismayed?
Not though the soldier knew
Someone had blundered.
Theirs not to make reply,
Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do and die.
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
Do really believe all those cannon fodder were anxious to die?
Most of the Finns just went to do the job at hand. I’ve talked with some of them. They certainly weren’t impressed by their German brothers in arms. I’m mostly happy with the decisions my forebears did. Third time’s the charm: Sh*t happens in war.
August 16th, 2021
Once again, if you invoke the history, you better know it. Always here, it was the civilian population that was the cannon fodder. Or, more accurately, the cattle to be slaughtered. Consequently, we bear no love for the butchers.
August 16th, 2021
Oh, good night, you young victim! We can continue this tomorrow with fresh insults.
August 16th, 2021
Good night.

7,507 Irish volunteers were killed during the Second World War. Population in 1939 was c. 2,960,000
Finland’s losses in the war were about 25,000 dead, 10,000 permanently disabled, and another 35,000 wounded, out of a population of only 3.5 million.
Ireland remained neutral. Finland didn’t have the luxury. But we did keep our independence. Even in hind sight I don’t think we could have done much better.
My mother spend time in a bomb shelter as a baby in 1939. You had “troubles”, meaning you spend your time fighting among yourselves. We did that, too, a little over hundred years ago.
This is pointless. I can find all kinds of nasty things about Irish history, and Finns aren’t spotless, either. Let’s stop these unfunny jokes here and leave history at its place i.e. behind. For now, anyway.
August 17th, 2021
You should have left it at yesterday. Try coming up with the figures of all the Irish people who fought in the British, American, Canadian & ANZAC forces, then you’ll be getting close to it. But that wouldn’t be a convenient number. Ireland’s position was neutral “in favour of the Allies” - which is the most likely reason we were bombed by your allies, the Nazis.
Describing the centuries-long conflict between Ireland & its brutal invaders, the British, as “fighting among yourselves” is thoroughly ignorant, and beneath you.
My uncles & aunts vividly recalled the terror “police” force sent by the British to carry out a campaign of murder, torture & destruction; these characters preceded the SS & Gestapo, but were essentially similar in purpose. This is called state terrorism. And it was a very fresh, raw memory in 1939.
There are indeed a great deal of intensely nasty things about Irish history, but this is only scratching the surface. It’s also a pointless exercise when people are merely trying to score points, because they’re ignorant of the history.
August 17th, 2021
I’m not really trying to score points. History is what you make of it. While I stupidly brought up sore points in your national history, I don’t especialĺy feel passionate about the mistakes of mine. Because I’m one of the little people (not to be confuced with your leprechauns) and so was damn near all of my ancestors. We live through history, but rarely make a mark outside of statistics. With zero power comes zero responsibilty, like the t-shirt says.
Should we take this or any other conversation in private? Just a suggestion, but I think People are checking their watches, and yawning.
August 17th, 2021
Anyway, let’s make a deal: I will study the Irish history more than fleetingly, and you’ĺl do the same with the Finnish. I can’t come up with more potato insults, anyhow. And your Viking stories appear more and more stale.
August 17th, 2021
Fair enough.
