Not denying that terrorism exists as a tactic, nor am I defining it away. Rather I point out the hypocrisy in the label’s usage. Russia/Iran/Syria are the big bad for supporting terrorism (read: acting against USA/Israel’s interests). When the USA utilizes “shock and awe” campaigns in the ME, that’s not terrorism, that’s fighting terrorism. When Hamas raids IDF outposts & Israeli settlements that’s terrorism. When Israel conducts airstrikes on women & children, that’s not terrorism, those are “surgical strikes”. Hyp-o-crites.
As for fanatical aims? Pushing democracy on a people that never had it? Pushing for equal rights for women, homosexuals & trans? If pushing your values on others is fanatical, we are guilty 10x over.

How very dare you?! They’re 20 dollar words! Ladled - positively ladled - with ironic detachment. Quite obvious, too. Iran is, as all know, the biggest sponsor of terror in the region. This is the grand hegemonic (sorry) strategy; their main rival & opponent is Saudi Arabia. They wish to displace & drain the Saudis power. Consequently, we have ongoing proxy conflicts. And this involves sponsoring terror - properly defined, of course.
The US et al foolishly involved themselves in the region - like many powers before. Wars such as the Russians in Afghanistan - where they killed 2 million Afghan people, and still had to withdraw in defeat.
What set off this latest round of horror against Israel on October 7th was definitionally terror. It involved intentional massacres & atrocities inflicted upon civilian people. Hamas wanted & planned for an Israeli reaction. So, Hamas, Islamic Jihad, etc. also conduct terror on their own people. They are also explicitly genocidal in their aims - they want to “exterminate” every Jewish man, woman & child. They don’t conceal their objectives. And they use their people as human shields & embed themselves in the civilian population; they steal all vital resources from their people to spend it on more weapons of futile death; they persecute women, gay people, opponents; etc. etc.
There, only one moderately large word. You big blue meanie.

Let us talk some common sense.
The U.S. claims to be facing a threat from Iran, Russia and from China, but those are alleged threats. When we start looking at and asking ourselves exactly what is the threat, it pretty quickly dissolves.
In the case of Iran, the threat is supposedly that Iran is developing nuclear weapons. Well, there was a way to prevent that, namely the joint agreement [the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or JCPOA], which the U.S. pulled out of and destroyed. The so-called Iran threat could be dealt with by establishing a nuclear-weapons-free zone in the Middle East. Everyone is in favor of that, including Iran. The U.S. blocks it, because they would have to open up Israeli nuclear weapons to inspection, and the U.S. won’t permit that. So, the so-called threat, if we even believe it, could be overcome, but U.S. policy blocks it.
And Russia, is it hard to imagine what might have been Washington’s response to the hypothetical event that Mexico wanted to join a Moscow-driven military alliance?
We hardly need to linger on the latter question. No country would dare to make such a move in what former President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s Secretary of War Henry Stimson called “Our little region over here,” when he was condemning all spheres of influence (except for our own — which in reality, is hardly limited to the Western hemisphere). Secretary of State Antony Blinken is no less adamant today in condemning Russia’s claim to a “sphere of influence”.
There was of course one famous case when a country in “Our little region” came close to a military alliance with Russia, the 1962 missile crisis. The circumstances, however, were quite unlike Ukraine. President John F. Kennedy was escalating his terrorist war against Cuba to a threat of invasion; Ukraine, in sharp contrast, faces threats as a result of its potentially joining a hostile military alliance. Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev’s decision to provide Cuba with missiles was also an effort to slightly rectify the enormous U.S. preponderance of military force after JFK had responded to Khrushchev’s offer of mutual reduction of offensive weapons with the largest military buildup in peacetime history, though the U.S. was already far ahead. We know what that led to.
Now, what about the China threat? That is supposed to be the major one. It’s worth looking closely and seeing exactly what the China threat is. There are plenty of things to condemn about Chinese behavior. There is internal repression in China, which is quite harsh in the western provinces. There are China’s moves to essentially assert almost total control over Hong Kong. There is China reinforcing islands in the South China Sea, which is in violation of international law. The United States is not in a strong position to object to that, since the U.S. is the only maritime power which hasn’t even ratified the law [the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea] and refuses to accept it. These are all serious problems. But they’re not a threat to the United States.
In fact, when we look through the threats, the best analysis I’ve seen was given by a distinguished statesman, the former prime minister of Australia, Paul John Keating. He went through the various claims about a China threat, and he finally concluded, I think realistically, that the China threat is China’s existence. China exists; it will not follow U.S. orders, unlike Europe, which follows what the U.S. demands. When the U.S. imposes sanctions on Iran, Europe obeys. It obeys U.S. commands. China doesn’t. China can’t be intimidated, unlike others. So, there is a China threat.
