“Jarvious Cotton’s great-great-grandfather could not vote as a slave. His great-grandfather was beaten to death by the Klu Klux Klan for attempting to vote. His grandfather was prevented from voting by Klan intimidation; his father was barred by poll taxes and literacy tests. Today, Cotton cannot vote because he, like many black men in the United States, has been labeled a felon and is currently on parole.”
As the United States celebrates the nation’s “triumph over race” with the election of Barack Obama, the majority of young black men in major American cities are locked behind bars or have been labeled felons for life. Although Jim Crow laws have been wiped off the books, an astounding percentage of the African American community remains trapped in a subordinate status–much like their grandparents before them.
In this incisive critique, former litigator-turned-legal-scholar Michelle Alexander provocatively argues that we have not ended racial caste in America: we have simply redesigned it. Alexander shows that, by targeting black men and decimating communities of color, the U.S. criminal justice system functions as a contemporary system of racial control, even as it formally adheres to the principle of color blindness. The New Jim Crow challenges the civil rights community–and all of us–to place mass incarceration at the forefront of a new movement for racial justice in America.

Oh please, this is pure propaganda. The most dangerous thing to an American black youth are the other black youths. The kkk has been dead for years.
Yeah there are a lot of black felons, mainly because there are a lot of black criminals.

Well, in mainland China (1.2 billion folks) the highest felon, and incarceration rates are the… Chinese? Lots of Chinese on Chinese crime. They must have a genetic disposition, yea that must be it. Sometimes we just have to put our ‘thinking’ hat on in the morning, not just our ‘I’m not racist… but” t-shirt.

It is true that most crimes committed against black people are done by other black people. However, most crimes committed against white people are committed by white people. It is the same for each race, so do not use the “black on black violence” excuse when white on white, latino on latino, or asian on asian crime is nearly just as high.

This is NOT the commercial version narrated by Karen Chilton, but rather a homebrewed version narrated by a well-meaning but ultimately inept amateur. Poor sound quality, poor narration.

It’s a great book, but the narration is amateur and the sound quality leaves much to be desired. They make mistakes that could be easily remedied with a simple edit or a new take, but were left in the audiobook files. With a better mic and more care I think the narration could be great, but the result is a sloppy first draft.
